The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is pleased to inform you of a fundingopportunity available to support local government match responsibility on federal discretionary grants. Senate Bill (SB) 536, passed by the 2023 Montana State Legislature, provides $100 million in state funding to MDT for the reconstruction and repair of state highways, off-system bridges, and/ormatching local applications for discretionary grants. SB 536 specifically set aside $20 million for distribution directly to cities and towns with a population of less than 10,000 and gave MDT discretion over how to spend the remaining $80million. You can find more details on how this funding has been distributed to-date here. In the fall of 2023, MDT dedicated $11 million of this funding to be used as a matching source forlocal road and bridge grants which was quickly committed to local governments across the state. As a result of the high demand, MDT has made an additional $5 million in funding available as a matching source for federal grants awarded to local governments for road or bridgerepair/construction. To be eligible: Funding requests must be for a match to a federal grant for road or bridge repair/construction projects. Projects must be locally administered AND supported by MDT to be eligible for fundingthrough this request process. A maximum of $1 million, per project, will be provided. If selected, MDT’s contribution is a one-time lump sum payment, based on the original grantapplication or agreement. Please note that cost increases for the project are the responsibility of the local government requesting funds.Grant requests must be submitted through MDT’s online form. Funding will be awarded by request to eligible projects meeting all established criteria on a first-come, first-serve basis until all funds have been committed and/or expended. Local governments that received SB 536 funding to match a discretionary grant in the fall of 2023 are allowed to apply again for SB 536 funding to match a federal discretionary grant for road/bridge repair/construction. This email serves as notice that the funding request process is now open to Montana’s local governments. For more information on this funding, eligibility criteria, or the request process, please visit MDT's State Funding for Local Infrastructure web page. You can also contact MDT’s Discretionary Grants team with any questions at mdtgrantsupport@mt.gov. The request form can be accessed directly here.
