Thank you for considering the following comments in your deliberations. Action Item. F.1. Nominations for Historic Preservation Awards.Landscape. Please select the Ponderosa Pine for the Landscape award. I assume this is the pine that islocated in the parking lot between Mendenhall and Main Streets at 5th Avenue, adjacent to the American Indian Institute, and has garnered a lot of attention on local social media lately. Using the USDA morphology calculations for aging the tree, it is of transitional age, over 100years old and more likely closer to 150 years old.* It was likely planted as Gallatin County is a bit of a donut hole for the natural habitat for this native tree. It has therefore been a part ofhuman culture in the Bozeman area for over a century. It has witnessed, and survived, multiple constructions and demolitions, droughts and tough winters, two world wars, and twopandemics. It's seen Bozeman from its earliest days of settlement into its current unprecedented growth. It is the declared Montana State Tree. And sadly, its future isdemolition. The new developer has no plans to try and improve its living conditions and to allow it to live out its days in peace. Therefore I urge you to honor this tree while it is alive. While the other nomination is very nice landscaping in a historic neighborhood, I think thePonderosa Pine is the more meaningful choice.
