I have lived in Bozeman 52 years, first teaching special education at Emerson School, later Emily
Dickinson Elementary and Sacajawea Middle Schools. I lived on North 20th when my son went to
kindergarten at Whittier Elementary School. For the last 22 years I have lived on S. Black Ave.
Fifteen years ago, my elderly father stayed at the nursing home where the proposed Guthrie apartments
are proposed. We spent many hours enjoying the safety of the neighborhood walks.
As a concerned long-term resident of Bozeman, I am well aware and accepted many of the changes that
have come with growth. I realize and support the need for affordable housing. I think that we should be
able to accommodate this without losing our lovely, safe, and established neighborhoods. City goal N-
1.11 states 'enable a gradual and predictable increase in density in developed areas over time.' The
Guthrie is definitely not a 'gradual and predictable increase in density..over time.'
What I am most concerned about is the change that seems to take neighborhood concerns out of the
hands of commission review. I hope you reconsider this today
To many residents and visitors alike, the essence of Bozeman is its friendly people, our vibrant downtown
and the character of the original neighborhood homes. That should be protected. Replacing a nursing
home (also well needed in Bozeman) with a 5-story unaffordable for most, short term rental with lack of
parking and significant increase in traffic (safety issue for school children) can't be undone once it's built.
This seems like a pivotal moment for the commission to show all present Bozeman residents that they are
being heard in their attempts to protect their neighborhoods.
Thank you,
Lynn Sawyer
