As a new resident of Bozeman for the last 9 months, I am shocked at how many Bozeman
residents consistently run traffic lights in this town. Also, I have discovered the number ofpatrol officers on duty each day is lower than 6 for the entire City of Bozeman! With the
number of residents and extended work force who are employed within Bozeman, there needsto be more police officers on patrol to compensate for increase in people. There also needs to
be a dramatic increase in traffic enforcement in Bozeman. Recently, I have seen moreaccidents at electronic traffic-controlled intersections. I have spoken with the current police
chief in person and he's informed me that the officers who may be on the street are notallowed to stop someone who runs a red light as the officer is headed to higher priority calls
for service, which I completely understand. However, this sets a precedence and other driversthink they can now run red lights without any recourse.
I understand that hiring additional officers is key and sometimes hard to do as the city has to
find qualified people to apply, and the salary must be compatible to the current cost of livinghere, which is extremely high. I also would be willing to vote in favor for additional funding
for BOTH our Police and Fire services, as they are both in need of new equipment andpersonnel. I would encourage the City of Bozeman to do much more for our public safety
services! There is an increasing number of new residents and we ALL deserve the bestkeeping us safe.
Sincerely,
James Thomas
