BACKGROUND:For Historic Preservation Month, which is recognized nationally in the month of May, the Historic Preservation Advisory Board recognizes projects, properties, individuals, and organizations that honor historic preservation and Bozeman’s history and cultural heritage. The nomination period was open to the public to submit in which HPAB received multiple nominations. Those nominated can be viewed here or via this link: https://weblink.bozeman.net/WebLink/Browse.aspx? id=289441&dbid=0&repo=bozeman HPAB will review the nominees during their meeting and vote for the winners in different categories which are: Commercial Project - A commercial project that embodies excellence through maintenance, stabilization, repair, planning, restoration, rehabilitation, stewardship, or adaptive reuse of our built environment. Must have been completed in the last 5 years. This can also include an institutional, industrial, or religious building. • Residential Project - A residential project that embodies excellence 7 through maintenance, stabilization, repair, planning, restoration, rehabilitation, stewardship, or adaptive reuse of our built environment. Must have been completed in the last 5 years. • New Infill Construction - A project that was recently constructed that fits into the character of the surrounding historic neighborhood and is sensitive to the existing built environment. Must have been completed in the last 5 years and can be commercial or residential. • Preservation Stewardship & Leadership - Recognizes an individual, group, agency, nonprofit, or business that has a positive impact on historic preservation and/or on Bozeman's cultural heritage. This can also be a project or activity designed to empower and educate the community at large and can include campaigns, fundraising, research, and construction. • Landscape - Recognizes enhancement to landscaping, streetscape, park, or open space that enhances the historic form, features, and details of a property/site. This can also include projects that promote sustainability and water conservation techniques while respecting the context of the area. The recipient may be either an individual or an organization. • Preservation Craft - Recognizes a construction-related activity applicable to the process of preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or reconstruction of a historic component of a structure. This can include projects such as restoring a historic sign, window, or other architectural components. It can also include an individual who works in the traditional trade and has a knowledge of historic preservation. • Cultural Heritage - Acknowledges those overlooked in Bozeman's historical narrative and celebrates the culture and heritage of traditionally underrecognized individuals and communities. Underrecognized individuals and communities comprise, among others, Black or African American, Asian and Asian American, Hispanic or Latino, Native American and Indigenous, those of mixed heritage and races, LGBTQIA+, and those with disabilities, though this list is not exhaustive. This award aims to honor individuals, organizations, or sites that have contributed to the preservation and promotion of the diverse cultural heritage of the Greater Gallatin "Valley of Flowers" area. It can be both tangible cultural heritage such as buildings, monuments, landscapes, books, food, arts and intangible cultural heritage such as storytelling, oral histories, language, traditions, and knowledge. Eligibility requirements included: Project/property must be located within Bozeman city limits Project must be complete by the date the application is submitted Have an original date prior to 1974 (infill projects should have been completed within the last 5 years) Person/organization can be from greater Gallatin area but needs to have ties to Bozeman 8 The award winners will be recognized at the Historic Preservation Awards on Thursday, May 30 at the Bozeman Event Space which is open to the public. BACKGROUND:Historic Preservation Month is recognized nationally in the month of May. The Historic Preservation Advisory Board has been busy planning multiple events to celebrate historic preservation and Bozeman's heritage and culture. The board will be discussing the month's events during the meeting. Events include: An all month scavenger hunt A cookie painting party at the Story Mansion on May 5 An speaking event with author Betsey Quammen (True West: Myth and Mending on the Far Side of America) at the Story Mansion on May 14 Along the Gallagator Tour: History of the Railway, South Tracy and more with Extreme History on May 21 Symbolism in the Sunset Hills Cemetery Tour with Extreme History on May 23 Historic Preservation Awards Ceremony on May 30 Details on events can be found on the Engage Bozeman page: https://engage.bozeman.net/hpm2024 UNRESOLVED ISSUES:None ALTERNATIVES:As identified by the board FISCAL EFFECTS:Funds for Historic Preservation Month have been budgeted. MEETING DATE:April 17, 2024 AGENDA ITEM TYPE:Citizen Advisory Board/Commission RECOMMENDATION:NA STRATEGIC PLAN:1.1 Outreach: Continue to strengthen and innovate in how we deliver information to the community and our partners. BACKGROUND:The Historic Preservation Advisory Board will partake in the Commission Assistance and Mentoring Program (CAMP) training from the National Alliance of Preservation Commission (NAPC). CAMP is led by qualified preservation professionals in support of NAPC's mission to build strong local preservation programs and leaders through education, training, and advocacy. This training will take place on Saturday, May 11. The following topics will be discussed at the training: Why Preserve: Introduction to Historic Preservation Identifying and Designating Historic Resources: Discusses designation at both National and local level Preservation Planning: Tools to establish meaningful goals on preservation programs Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Historic Preservation: Addresses how preservation efforts can prioritize inclusion to tell a comprehensive story and remain relevant Conservation Overlay Districts: Discusses regulatory components of conservation overlay districts Resources of the Recent Past: How to understand and manage historic resources from the 1950s-1980s. During this item, staff will provide more details on the training and the board will have the opportunity to ask any questions.
