Hi Sarah and Alex-
I recently became aware of the ponderosa pine's plight this week when the BDC released their article
about the new hotel- Project 22176. 1 am both alarmed and extremely disappointed to find that the
pine is destined for removal especially after the trouble gone to preserve it during the previous hotel
demolition. Many other residents are also in shock that this stately landmark tree is being removed
when its location is in a future parking lot. Certainly it could be allowed to live out its days in a parking
lot? It's also confusing when the project narrative mentions the planting of legacy species and the
landscape plan shows trees planted in approximately the same location.
As far as I can tell, this tree might be the only mature Ponderosa Pine in all of Bozeman and is likely
one of our oldest remaining large trees. Given a little space and nutrition, this pine might outlast us all
as they can live for hundreds of years. It seems like a perfect future "heritage tree" and it's also been
our state tree since 1908. Ecologically,188 species of butterflies and moths use ponderosa pines as a
caterpillar host plant in our area.
I don't want to just react or speculate on the decision as I've heard it was made a year ago. Can you
please help me understand why this is the plan? And if there is any chance of a reversal of this
decision? And if killed and "removed" what will happen to the tree's wood. It's valuable for all kinds of
things and doesn't belong in the landfill.
I hope to hear back from you at your earliest convenience since the public comment period ends
March 7 and your response will make a difference to my comments.
Thank you in advance,
Marcia Kaveney
