Urban Parks and Forestry Board Work Plan
I am writing to comment on Agenda Item G.1 FYI/Discussion: CY2024 - CY2025 Urban
Parks and Forestry Board Work Plan. In addition to my Jan 25, 2024, public comment to
the UPF https://weblink.bozeman.net/WebLink/DocView.aspx?
id=287544&dbid=0&repo=BOZEMAN, I add the following:
First: Suggest integrating all FORestry internal priorities into a single focus area, e.g.,
"Focus Area 2: Review reports pertaining to activity in Bozeman’s urban forests."
Second: Within the current Focus Area 2—for both public and private lands—the emphasis
should be placed on protecting and preserving local wetlands "on site" as opposed to
focusing on developing a local wetland bank. Although a local wetland bank is better than
an offsite wetland bank, a local wetland bank is no substitute for protecting and preserving
existing wetlands "on site."
Third: Within the current Focus Area 2, exploring more ways to enhance water
conservation on public and private lands within City limits is imperative. One way to
enhance water conservation on both public and private lands is to codify water
conservation measures within the proposed UDC update. Undoubtedly, obtaining grants for
public water conservation projects and offering financial incentives to private property
owners can help, too. However, under no circumstances should the UPF or the City
entertain the environmentally, socio-culturally, and economically destructive idea of building
a water supply pipeline to pump water upriver from Canyon Ferry Reservoir to Bozeman—
as I noted in a BDC LTE dated Feb 2, 2024
