Dear Sustainability Board and Staff Liaison- I see that you will be working on your work plan for 2023-2024 tonight and I hope you willinclude the following items in your plan: Urban Tree Equity- offering and supporting improved text to the relevant UDC codes to keep existing trees standing, especially groves of native trees in green development. This would also involve improving UDC code for transportation pathways- allowing for creative design around existing trees. * You might remember a discussion aboutcreative design in green field developments and compact urban design with Chris Saunders late in 2023. And it's also relevant to the presentation you will be receivingtonight on Engineering Design Standards and compact development. Case in point- UDC codes need to be made enforceable to require developers to work around theexisting trees (carbon sequestration) and utilizing natural stormwater landscapes (groundwater recharge and purification) instead of leveling the land, removing alltrees, and replacing natural stormwater drainage with underground pipes channeling water back to rivers with little local recharge as done with Canyon Gate 2022/2023.Supports 6.P. 1-4 in the Climate Plan. * Help support the idea of preserving canopy size when there is a loss of trees so thatenough trees are planted to replace the lost canopy, not just the number of trees. (6.P.2) Tree Equity also can be supported under Local Foods- (6.N.1-4) Please support keepingyards available as many Bozemanites grow their own food including fruit trees. As zoning changes reduce available yard space, we lose this ability. Please participate withthe UDC update in regards to the zoning changes and maintaining yard availability and working with the Urban Forester to allow fruit trees for boulevard trees. Please includebackyard growers in your "Food System Stakeholder" group while doing mapping. (Example: With my one plum tree on E. Davis St., I supplied Hawthorne students withhundreds of pounds of free plums for many years.) Please require all composting systems to be bear proof. As I'm sure you are aware, bearswill not need to hibernate as long when food sources stay available. The recent grant should allow for some funds to be put aside for this- we can be leaders in bear country! Thank you for your hard work and for considering the inclusion of these points as items in your upcoming work plan. Best,Marcia Kaveney
