The house was originally built as a single family home, but is currently being utilized as a commercial property. It is a wood-framed 1.5-story Craftsman style bungalow with several modern additions. The house has a rectangular plan shape with a concrete foundation. The roof is front gabled and clad in wood shingles. A rear shed roofed addition is present on the south elevation, with modern windows and a sheet metal roof. The exterior is clad in horizontal wood siding. The primary façade faces north, onto W. Babcock St. The primary entrance is centered within a recess obscured by a modern covered porch that wraps around 2/3s of the front façade and most of the west elevation. This porch is wood-framed with a sheet metal shed roof. Some windows appear to have been replaced with a modern sash, including fixed lites and sliding windows. Some original double hung windows remain, and a lead glass window is present on the north end of the east elevation. Overall, most of the original openings are intact. There is a shed roofed single stall wood-framed, and wood-sided detached garage to the south of the house. According to Montana Cadastral records, it was built in 1983. The property and house are in excellent condition. Vegetation around the property includes a deciduous tree off the northwest corner of the front of the house, and multiple types of deciduous bushes along the property lines and in the backyard. In 1985, the open space behind the house out to the back alleyway was paved in asphalt, presumably for parking. The property was first recorded in August 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district,” and was still described as a residential property. The site is in excellent condition overall, and has undergone numerous modifications since its original construction in the early 20th century. Metcalf finds that because of the modern changes, it no longer retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 818 W BABCOCK ST Site Number: 044 HISTORY OF PROPERTY This site is part of an area that was platted as the Park Addition by Nelson Story, John S. Dickerson, and Water Cooper on May 19, 1883. The Bozeman City Council vacated part of the tract on April 21, 1892. Louis F. and Amanda A. Menage, of Hennepin County, Minnesota surveyed and platted the West Park Addition to Bozeman on May 14, 1892. Jonas and Nancy Henderson purchased this property and the adjacent lots to the east in 1900 from the Victoria Land Company, a Minnesota Corporation. By 1904, they had built a duplex on the adjacent property (812 W. Babcock). This residence was built between 1918 and 1920 by Jonas Henderson, possibly for his son Guy R. Henderson who received the property on March 1, 1920 from his father and was living in the house by 1922 (R. L. Polk & Co. 1922). Guy R. Henderson was born on December 6, 1887 in Bozeman to Jonas and Nancy Henderson. He served in World War I (Ancestry.com 2001), and worked as a mail carrier for the U. S. Postal Service while living in this residence (R. L. Polk & Co. 1927). Guy married Lillian Gill in 1920 in Bozeman (Ancestry.com 2016). Lillian Gill was born in 1896, in Missouri to Robert B. and Sallie S. Gill. Guy Henderson died in this residence in 1965 (Ancestry.com 2001). Lillian died in 1973. Guy and Lillian are buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, (Findagrave.com 2004). Upon the death of Guy R. Henderson, the property transferred to his wife, Lillian. Lillian’s sister, Ellen E. Gill, received the property on June 10, 1974 through a decree of distribution. Ellen E. Gill was born in 1900 in Magnolia, Missouri to Benjamin and Sallie Stewart Gill. Ellen came to Montana when she was 14 years old and attended Gallatin County High School. She attended and graduated from the Normal College in Ellensburg, Washington. She also attended Montana State College. She began teaching in 1918 at the Upper Bridger School, and taught at schools in Middle Creek, Little Bear, Belgrade, and White Sulphur Springs, as well as at the “Cracker Box” school located between Reese Creek and Pass Creek. She taught school for 44 years. After her teaching career, she worked at the Montana State University library until 1972 when she retired (Findagrave.com 2004) Patricia L. Sinnema purchased the property on October 8, 1976. Sinnema owned the property for a short time. Kenneth G. and Susan J. Slater purchased the property on July 18, 1977. Gary B. Kline purchased the property on December 21, 1983 and is the current owner as of March 2020. Table 1. Chain of Title, 818 West Babcock Street, Bozeman, Montana.
