Members of the Community Development Board and Mayor Cunningham and members of the Commission I am concerned about the Commission’s charge to advisory boards that priority accomplishments must be measurable. While this may be a useful tool for certain boards whose efforts lend themselves to statistical analysis, other boards, especially the CDB have very important responsibilities that don’t. The update of the UDC requires a careful balancing between the preservation of neighborhood character and the provision of accessible housing. In this case in particular, the charge to measure accomplishments is artificially limiting and detrimental to the considerations of both the board and the commission. I am aware of the old dogma that what gets measured gets managed but even Fortune Magazine has pointed out the very serious shortcomings of such a confined approach. When we elect Commissioners, it is for their judgment, wisdom, and experience and the same qualities are behind the Commission’s board appointments. As the Board and Commission work with issues that are so critical to the quality of life in Bozeman, please drop this quantitative charge to the boards who are significantly involved in qualitative work. As always, thank you for your valuable and difficult service. Ron Brey 1106 South 3rd Bozeman.
