Willson Architectural Firm/City/State: Bozeman, MT Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: McDonald 1984, Cohen 1985 This site consists of one historical architectural feature: a commercial bank built ca. 1920 (24GA1895). It was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects (revised in 1985 by Matt Cohen), and again in 2014 by Douglas Davidson. McDonald regarded the site as an "intrusive element within a potential historic district” due to extensive alterations to the exterior made in the 1970s. The site is located within the 1986 NRHP-listed Main Street Historic District (24GA0952) but is considered a non-contributing element due to its loss of historic materials and inability to convey its historic character from the District’s period of significance. McDonald described the building as follows: "This detached five-story commercial structure has a rectangular plan with a symmetrical façade consisting of central entrances at the street level and three vertical rows of continuous fixed windows on the next four floors. The concrete and glass construction has a flat built-up roof and the exterior façade was remodeled in 1972." A brief description from Davidson of the building is as follows: "The Commercial National Bank, later the First National Bank, and presently a US Bank, was originally designed in a Classical Revival style, but was remodeled in 1971 in a thoroughly contemporary style, though the original façade may be largely intact under the contemporary shell." Metcalf revisited the site on October 29, 2020, and noted no apparent changes. The single story addition to the east is the main entrance to the bank and consists of the same exterior style as the ground floor portion of the 5 story building. The bank sign on the single story portion extends up past the roof line. The site is in good condition. The remodeled exterior has now reached the 50-year threshold for consideration as historic; however, Metcalf finds that the site has not achieved new significance that would merit individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, or D in that time period, and concurs with the previous recommendation that it does not retain historic character in reference to the period of significance for which surrounding properties are considered contributing to the Main Street Historic District. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 104 E Main St Site Number: 24GA1895 (update) HISTORY OF PROPERTY A thorough history of the site is provided by Cohen (1985) and Davidson (2014). In brief, the Commercial National Bank built the five-story structure in 1920 after renting from other facilities. It was designed by Fred F. Willson in the Classical Revival style. Willson "worked for Link and Haire, Architects, from 1906 to 1910, after which he moved to Bozeman and continued to design buildings until he helped form the firm of Shanley, Willson, and Hugenin in 1928. Willson designed several of Bozeman's buildings, including the Gallatin County Courthouse and the Ellen Theatre" (Davidson 2014). In 1956 the Commercial National Bank became the First National Bank of Bozeman (Cohen 1985). In 1971 the exterior was remodeled in a contemporary design, "and the Security Bank and Trust Company building to the east, along with half the Black Building, were destroyed to make room for an addition" (Davidson 2014). And according to Davidson, on December 27, 2001, "US Bank National Association, which had merged with First National Bank of Bozeman, granted the property by quitclaim deed to First Building Corporation of Minnesota." US Bank National Association is currently still occupying the site. Neither McDonald, Cohen, nor Davidson wrote about the associated 1970s drive through bank (site 131) located to the southeast of site 203, off of E Babcock St..US Bank also occupies that structure. McDonald Architects and regarded as an "intrusive element within a potential historic district." In 1985 McDonald's report was revised by Matt Cohen who added a thorough history of the site, and in 2014 was recorded again by Douglas Davidson. A 1971 remodel completely compromised all aspects of integrity, and Metcalf finds that it does not retain sufficient integrity to convey its original historic character. In the 50 years since the remodel, Metcalf does not find that the property has achieved additional individual significance and recommends that it remains a non-contributing element within the NRHP listed Main Street Historic District (24GA0952). Sect. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria. With its current exterior, it has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. While it is located within the boundaries of the Main Street Historic District, Metcalf concurs with the previous assessments from McDonald and Davidson, that the site is a non-contributing element, and thus recommends the site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. The remodel in 1971, which covered the original 1920 exterior, has greatly affected integrity of design, materials, workmanship, feeling, and association.
