Dear Bozeman City Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Commissioners:
I am pleased to submit my enthusiastfc recommendatfon of two exceptfonal candidates to join you in your
service on the Bozeman City Commission: Emma Bode and Mark Egge.
Emma Bode: I have known Emma for many years in our common pursuit of a more functfonal democracy
in Montana and a better future for our home in Bozeman. As a candidate and then Representatfve for one
of Bozeman’s legislatfve districts while Emma was serving as Forward Montana’s Bozeman Field Manager,
I witnessed Emma’s tfreless work to ensure Bozeman residents’ voices and votes mattered in the politfcal
process. I found Emma to be hard working and completely dedicated to a vision of a more accessible,
representatfve, vibrant body politfc. She was also exceptfonally strategic in an increasingly divisive politfcal
landscape. Emma understands the nuances of working within a conservatfve state and how to align her
goals, strategies, and outcomes with the realitfes of Montana’s politfcal context. Over the course of two
challenging legislatfve sessions, Emma was a voice of calm, encouragement, and hope.
Mark Egge: Very few people have spent as much tfme envisioning a more beautfful, just, environmentally
sound future of our community than Mark, a process he has been engaged in since he was a freshman at
MSU. Mark has just not studied how Bozeman might grow but has actfvely worked towards that future
through helping improve bike lanes, working on local ordinances, and serving on Montana’s statewide
housing task force (which has been a highly effectfve task force despite the Administratfon’s track
record!!!). Mark’s technical expertfse and thoughtiul approach has been essentfal for my own legislatfve
work on housing policy.
I have much convictfon that Emma and Mark’s temperaments, insights, and experience will add much to
the City Commission. However, the most important value either of these two candidates will bring to the
Commission is their heart.
Politfcs is exceptfonally hard. You all intfmately know this just as I do. Our community and our state deserve
public servants who define others not by what separates us but by all we share. Whether it is the UDC
process, urban campers, local control in the context of the legislature, or Bozeman’s collectfve grief around
how our community is growing and changing, Emma and Mark will look at the issues and stakeholders
with compassion and empathy. To me, nothing is more important than bringing love into politfcs in this
moment in tfme and I know both Emma and Mark will be able to bring that heart to all of you, to our
beautfful home, and to Bozeman’s role in our state.
Thank you all for your service to our community. I see you and feel deep gratftude for your service and
care.
Sincerely,
Alice Buckley
