Dear City Commission Members:
I am writing in reference to your upcoming selection of a replacement for former
Commissioner Pomeroy. You have many applicants. As you engage in your deliberations, I
would call your attention to the fact that John Meyer received 3,991 votes in the recent
mayoral race. He made the effort to run for office and finished second. That should make
your decision easy. You know, without having to guess, that he has 3,991 voters behind him.
Obviously, his perspective is one that many residents share. Of the other candidates, most did
not run in the last election. Other applicants could have run for office, but chose not to go to
the trouble. It really is as simple as that. You know exactly how many voters voted for Mr.
Meyer. Ignoring their votes would only deepen voter frustration with city government. As
you know, in the last election, only a minority of eligible voters actually cast ballots. The
incoming mayor-elect was elected by a plurality, not a majority of voters. If you add Mr.
Morrison’s vote total together with Mr. Meyer’s (and Ms. Madgic’s), you would have the views
of the majority of voters who actually cast their ballots in the last election represented on the
Commission.
Sincerely,
Bob Rydell
