Hinkins - Proposal by Left Lane Development regarding the Public LibraryFrom:Susan Hinkins To:Susan Gregory; Terry Cunningham Cc:Agenda Subject:[EXTERNAL]Proposal by Left Lane Development regarding the Public Library Date:Tuesday, November 14, 2023 11:17:04 AM CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. November 14, 2023 To: Bozeman Library Board of Trustees Deputy Mayor Terry Cunningham Subject: MOU from the Bozeman Hotel (Left Lane Development) I have read the MOU presented by the Bozeman Hotel (Left Lane Development) and I find nothing in it that benefits our city or its residents. Instead, it degrades our public space in several ways. The Public Library is probably the most valuable public space we have. It is important for all ages. It is free and open to all, regardless of income or abilities. Public libraries have been an important part of my life since age 5, when we moved to a town with a library. I moved to Bozeman in the 1970s and have benefited from the various stages of the Bozeman library, from the small Carnegie library to the current wonderful space that we have. Our library is truly a gem. The proposal described in the MOU not only takes away an important part of this public space, but it also wants to dictate how we develop our library resources. The city/library would be prohibited ‘from building any vertical structures on the Parking Lot Property.’ This is apparently to protect the development’s ‘view’ space. We lose both parking space and open space. And there would be impact on using the library during construction. I am outraged by their proposal to profit by taking our public space and interfering with the current and future use of the library. This proposal should be rejected outright. I don’t see any benefit for the residents from any part of this plan. Left Land Development should design their development so that it fits onto the land they actually own.
