To the Transportation Advisory Board: would like to start a conversation about bicycle safety,
thinking about honoring Kelly Fulton, who passed last year. Currently, there's an internationaleffort to teach motorists about how to stop people from opening their car doors and
unintentionally causing bike crashes into doors. Obviously, this is not how Kelly died, but it isan important safety mechanism.
This maneuver is called the "Dutch Reach," and instructs drivers to open their doors with their
left hand, thus ensuring they must turn and look into the street before the door is fully opened, with a view of any bicyclists coming up beside them.
No funding is required for this effort. Would Bozeman have an interest in a public relations
campaign around this idea? Can we add it into Montana's OPI Driver Instruction curriculum?
Putting out the idea, have contacted Candace Mastel.
Respectfully,Julie Hitchcock
