Bozeman development codes seem to be missing any provision for protection of solar
exposure of individual residences. For example, the houses directly north of the high
rise at the southeast corner of E. Lamme and N. Bozeman streets are completely
shaded from the sun in winter. In summer, the exposure period is truncated.
Solar easements provide homeowners the right to unobstructed sunlight on their
property. If Bozeman government is serious about achieving its climate plan goals, such easements should be automatic. Buildings no taller than one or two stories
should be allowed in neighborhoods of one story houses.
The five story monstrosities under construction in the N. Willson and W. Beall Sts.area are out of place. They block direct sunlight from reaching the houses and streets
on the north side in winter leaving them locked in ice all winter long.
Direct sunlight in winter saves on use of fossil fuels for heating and powers solarpanels to generate electricity. It is extremely shortsighted to ignore these resources.
