Commentary on possible ban of Short Term Rentals in Bozeman.
Our son attends MSU and we have used STR properties in Bozeman on several occasions. We prefer STR over
hotel stays. STRs are more economical, and allow us to cook at home, entertain, and reside in complete comfort.
I believe that an outright ban on STRs will create more problems than it solves. The demand for short term housing
will not go away, and the inventory reduction will put immense pressure on the traditional providers. I can well
imagine that some will continue to rent their properties “under the table”.
I would urge the City Commission to focus on what problem they are really trying to solve. Attacking STRs may
feel like the right thing to do, but it may only create new problems for the city to deal with.
