As an owner of Montana property, I've read through the proposed and existing city
amendments on the topic of STRs and find it extremely disconcerting that even
though a vast majority of public comments support NOT banning (particularly Type-3)
STRs, the Bozeman City Council isn't giving this ANY consideration!
It's a reflection of POOR PLANNING on the city's part that affordable housing has not
kept up with demand, not individual home owners who are operating STRs. What isthe city doing to reduce the price of homes due to high demand in the real estate
market? Is that not one of the reasons people can't afford housing? That being said,
trying to deal with not only Bozeman, but the state's high popularity with tourists, and
hence, a need to provide accommodations for visitors, is an issue that has grownexponentially over the past decade, and at a rate that prohibits timely responses to
housing affordability.
However, if the city goes ahead with banning Type 3 STRs, what will this reallyaccomplish? Home owners will just be forced to accept long term renters but asking
for monthly rents that will certainly hover in the thousands. Does the council actually
think THIS would solve the affordable housing issue? What will be next? Telling home
owners what they can or cannot charge for rent?
