Dear Commissioners:
It is certainly possible for a member of the Bozeman City Commission to render an impartial
judgement about matters unrelated to his or her own personal circumstances, and we don’tenvy those of you who are regularly saddled with that task. That observation notwithstanding,
we find it disconcerting that some members of the Commission may reside in housingdevelopments that will be insulated from the consequences that would arise from a vote to
eliminate all R-1 and R-2 zoning in the City of Bozeman, as is recommended in the currentUDC draft revision. Those who are fortunate enough to reside where they are protected by
covenants or in an area currently zoned R-4 (high density) will experience none of thenegative consequences that will result from a decision to eliminate R-1 and R-2 zoning
designations in order to pave the way for a dramatic increase in density throughout the city,including within established historic neighborhoods. We fear that the cards may be stacked
against those of us who will suffer the consequences of the proposed change, in that someCommissioners may find it difficult to identify with the anguish felt by those whose lives and
cherished properties will be affected by a yes vote. We ask merely that you ponder this as youconsider the proposal before you.
This issue is tearing this community apart, and we suggest that individual commissioners
spend some one on-one-time with residents who fear having their lives turned upside down bythe proposed zoning changes. Such engagement could serve to further sensitize
Commissioners to the concerns of affected home owners. Just sayin’.
