This is concerning the City of Bozeman’s proposal to re-zone the city from its traditional R-1, R-2, and R-3 into Zone R-A. While the history of zoning in the US and abroad shows a mixture of ultraism and racism, Montana should be the last place to hold this debate. While Montana is the four largest state in the US it has the 8th smallest population. With three times as many cattle as humans, there should be plenty of room for all without the downside of “urban blight.” Yes, with Montana’s population growth there has been an increase in the need for affordable housing. However, the solution presented by the City of Bozeman is clearly based on one factor: greed – the same reason our indigenous population lives on reservations. We should challenge the companies and individuals (local, national, and foreign) who propose ravaging the city’s building codes to provide its residents with images of their personal neighborhoods. Are they willing to have multi- story apartments with requisite parking, garbage bins, pollution, and noise next door? The argument that all citizens of a community should have the ability to walk to town is bogus – in how many cities in the US with a population of 50,000 or more can one “walk to town”? It was likely its “wide open spaces” that drew people to Montana – why should this ingredient be morphed into the in-greed-ient of a few already wealthy individuals? Bottom line: will rezoning improve the quality of life in Bozeman? Of course not! Look at the misery in Missoula. 10/3/23, 9:32 AM about:blank about:blank 1/2 Customer Submission #CS-23-660 Open Created on October 2, 2023 by William Scharnberg Description This is concerning the City of Bozemanʼs proposal to re-zone the city from its traditional R-1, R-2, and R-3 into Zone R-A.
