They allow people to visit and enjoy the Gallatin Valley in the full comfort of a home, something not available in a hotel, and contribute to an increase in tourist activity and spending in the City. Regulation is important and many cities limit how many STRs are allowed, thereby reducing the impact they can have on a neighborhood. Eliminating them benefits no one, as there is no guarantee that homeowners who rent out second homes will then rent them long term. Many STR owners use the income to help pay for the homes they hope to retire to, and they provide an invaluable resource for visitors. My family would simply stop visiting Bozeman if an STR was not available. There are plenty of cities that allow them and welcome visitors. Tourist towns definitely have to find a delicate balance between meeting the needs of both tourists and residents. Eliminating STRs will not solve the rental crisis in Bozeman.
