I would like to share my concerns regarding the proposed changes to Bozeman’s UDC. My first
worry is that once a zoning change is made in Bozeman, it is irreversible. There is no chance for an
oops factor if the outcome doesn’t meet expectations. This alone should give us all pause and make
sure we take sufficient time to consider what is at stake with any change.
In a very short time, the North Willson area from Lamme to Short Street and from Black to Grand has
morphed into a high density, towering mass of unimaginative architecture. Every backyard left in the
area now has 2 or 3 stories that look directly down on them, destroying privacy, light and a sense of
community. This doesn’t include the expensive new condos on North Willson which replaced a
trailer park and apple grove. But I doubt anything new in this area is “affordable”. for change
The city hired Code Studio well in advance of SB 382 passing. I think back tracking on research to
make sure we don’t have to change the code twice would be prudent. Let’s make sure the people of
Bozeman are informed of the choices available in SB 382. Public awareness should be the top
priority for the city staff and city commissioners, so we don’t enter into another needless lawsuit.
And just maybe, we don’t need any changes!!
Finally, I think we can heed the words of Jennifer Madgic quoted in the Chronicle recently regarding
the new Park Plan. She said “I think the great thing about this plan is it’s about people …it’s about
recreation and health, physical health, mental health it’s all these great things that make our
community the community that it is. I really see this plan as improving upon the good things that we
all love about Bozeman.” May the same be said for any changes made to the UDC.
Respectfully submitted,
