Dear BCD Board members,
I’m concerned about what seems to be a speedy and poorly aired move toward adopting the proposed new
Universal Development Code. We are homeowners on the near south side of town (400 block of South Third) and
value the quiet, historic quality of our neighborhood very much. (I have lived here on the same lot for 38 years. I am
deeply invested, in emotional as well as financial terms, in community and neighborhood life. My neighbors on the
400 block are also my friends, and we meet once each week, outdoors, rain or shine or snow, on Friday afternoons,
to share a drink, pet each other’s dogs, and chat.) I am not yet deeply informed as to how the new UDC might affect
such neighborhoods and neighborhood values, and perhaps that’s largely my own fault, but also perhaps the plan has
been advanced a little too quickly and quietly. I hope to be able to attend your hearing on Monday. In any case, I
would like to see more public discussion of the implications of the plan, pro and con, before fateful decisions are
made.
