I am urging members of the Community Development Board and the Bozeman City Commission to
reject the section of the proposed Development Code
Update that changes current R-1 and R-2 designations to RA. Allowing multi-plex dwellings in single
family neighborhoods will drastically change the
character of these neighborhoods.
I live in a neighborhood currently zoned R-1. It has a variety of residents, including retirees,
professionals, university professors, and families with young children.
This is a neighborhood where we watch our neighbor’s house when they are away, water their
flowers, and plow their driveway before they return. I am
puzzled as to why this type of neighborhood is now considered a bad thing.
I also find the process and time frame for this revision troubling. The draft was not available until
mid-August. Then there were several open houses and a zoom
presentation for the public, none of which were well publicized. Most people I spoke to have no
knowledge of the code update, let alone an understanding of
its massive scope. Now we have a public hearing tonight before the Development Board and a
presentation to the City Commission on October 24, followed by a
public hearing on November 14. Once again, these events are not well publicized. Even more
concerning is the stated expectation on the project timeline that this
updated UDC will be voted on and adopted before the end of the year—barely 5 months after the
draft was available.
Our family neighborhoods are an integral part of the fabric of Bozeman, along with our dynamic
downtown and lovely historic districts. Please carefully consider the
far-reaching implications of this sweeping zoning change before endorsing it.
Thank you for your consideration.
