Thank you for your consideration,The Gallatin Watershed Council -- Lilly McLane, Watershed Restoration DirectorGallatin Watershed Councilhttp://gallatinwatershedcouncil.org Cell: 410.371.8221 To:City of Bozeman Commission From:Gallatin Watershed Council RE:Resolution 5502,Adopting the Parks,Recreation, and Active Transportation Plan Date:9/12/2023 Dear Commissioners, The Gallatin Watershed Council (GWC)would like to express support for the PRAT Plan.GWC has participated throughout the drafting process, paying particular attention to Goal 4:Natural Resources. Our mission is to guide collaborative water stewardship in the Gallatin Valley for a healthy and productive landscape.Goal 4:Natural Resources outlines strategies that have significant natural resource implications and that we find innovative and exciting. We see this plan as a step towards managing our community’s rapid growth more sustainably.Parks can be a powerful piece of this story, and GWC would like to commend the Parks Department for recognizing the importance of playing a more active role in natural resource conservation and stewardship. We are also happy to see the PRAT Plan acknowledge many opportunities to work with community partners and a desire to bolster these relationships.GWC work includes stream and wetland restoration projects, education, and watershed planning. There are several strategies included in the Plan that align with GWC’s mission, and we welcome the opportunity to collaborate with the Parks Department as a technical resource, and on nature education, volunteer programing, and signage. Once adopted,we strongly encourage the City to support the Parks Department to implement the Plan successfully.Goal 4:Natural Resources directs further strategic planning, program development, thoughtful development review, and updates to the UDC.Ultimately, the success of these actions will be dependent on capacity, and it will be critical to have adequate staffing across the board, include appropriate expertise to guide and review natural resource impacts, and leverage community partnerships to help out. Our community values clean air, clean water,open-space,and wildlife. The Plan states that,“Through the engagement process, the plan uncovered that the City’s parks and trails provide an important oasis in the fastest growing city in Montana.Bozeman residents clearly value opportunities to connect with nature.”Thank you for listening.Good land management is good water management, and we are excited to build a more resilient future together.
