Lead Service Line Trainings for MontanaCommunities
The Montana Department of Commerce is accepting community requests
for assistance with identifying Lead Service Lines (LSL) and replacing or
mitigating LSL where they exist.
Starting this month, Commerce's Community Technical Assistance Program
(CTAP) and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will
offer a monthly LSL virtual training series for Montana communities on the
fourth Thursday of every month.
The first virtual hour-long meeting will be held September 28 at 3 p.m. and
cover how to complete an inventory, navigate the new LSL landing page
and request assistance for completing inventories.
Interested communities are invited to join the monthly trainings via Zoom
webinar by registering in advance at the link below. Registrants will receive
a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Join us to learn more about the LSL inventory, building public engagement
and hosting community meetings. Free community toolkits consisting of on-
line assets and printed materials will be available to public water systems
who qualify for the program. Recordings will be uploaded to the LSL
Technical Assistance Program page for easy reference within one week of
the training.
With funding provided by the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act
of 2021, Montana has a historic opportunity to reduce lead in our drinking
water. No safe threshold for lead exposure exists; a common source of lead
in drinking water is the service lines from water mainlines to homes. The
precise extent of LSL in Montana is currently unknown. The LSL inventory
will be completed by October 16, 2024. Once the extent of LSL is known
and their locations have been identified, the State will work with
communities to replace or mitigate those lines.
