To whom it may concern:
I am writing to express my disapproval of the proposed ordinance 2147 being considered by the Transportation
Advisory Board and the Bozeman City Commission.
I do not support the criminalization of homelessness. This ordinance does nothing to alleviate the underlying
conditions that are long term causes of the urban camping problem and it increases the stress of the campers and city
staff tasked with enforcing symbolic efforts to “do something” about the problem.
A 5 day interval is an unreasonable amount of time to relocate vehicles and belongings especially in the condition
many are in. It will create acrimonious situations between overwhelmed city staff and those in the urban camps. An
RV can stay at a federal or state park for 14 days before having to move and i advocate this length or even 30 days
as the minimum in an ordinance.
More than this, I would much rather see a structured urban camping place set aside for these vehicles and people
that is subsidized by the city and provides some basic amenities. No doubt even with this solution there will be
street camping but until there are alternatives I feel the current ordinance is inhumane.
