Dear City Commission,
The Canyon Gate development is a disgrace. There has been no attempt to preserve the natural habitat as
required by our City code: "Natural environment. The design and development of all land uses must be
properly related to topography, and must, to the extent possible, preserve the natural terrain, natural
drainage, existing topsoil, trees and other existing vegetation.”
The beautiful Cottonwood trees were all razed, destroying precious habitat and there is a scar upon the
landscape.
Have there been any consequences for the developer for this action? I cannot tell from the easily available
information that the City Commission made any effort to assure that “natural terrain”be preserved. We will
be left with a heat island and invaluable habitat has been lost. No planting of small immature trees will
replace the majestic Cottonwoods. And now that land is for sale? Is this legal? What actions have you
taken?
This summer there have been multiple bear sightings in town. For the first time in 45 years I have seen a
bald eagle in town; saw deer hit by traffic on 19th Street and video of a moose on Oak street. Animal habitat
is being destroyed and the animals displaced and will be soon gone from our valley.
We must focus on responsible, sustainable development in Bozeman and Gallatin County. This ought to be
among your first priorities.
Best,
Margaret Wheeler
