To: Urban Parks and Forestry Board (UPFB) Subject: June 22, 2023, UPFB presentation about the value of native trees and other native
plants to Bozeman
I am writing to thank the UPFB for its June 22 presentation about the value of native trees
and other native plants to Bozeman. Based on that presentation, I encourage the UPFB tofocus on protecting existing, native trees because such trees might be ecologically
irreplaceable, whether they are standalones or part of mixed-age, urban forests. Also, I
politely suggest the best way to protect existing, native trees is by grounding their
protection in City code (i.e., law), as well as in City plans (i.e., sociocultural-orienteddocuments).
Again, my thanks to the UPFB for its June 22 presentation about the value of native trees
and other native plants to Bozeman. I look forward to the UPFB adopting this topic as a
“work item” for CY2023, with the goal of suggesting changes to City code that can
guarantee the short-term and long-term protection of Bozeman’s existing, native trees.
