RE: Soil Corrosivity Test Results – Norton East Ranch Subdivision Phase 5 (161141)
Mr. Nielsen:
This letter is to provide a summary of the soil corrosivity testing on two soil samples obtained from two test pits
located in Norton Ranch East Phase 5. This information is being provided to satisfy the requirements of Section
02660 – Water Distribution, 3.3 – Polyethylene Encasement of the City of Bozeman Modifications to Montana
Public Works Standard Specifications, 6th Edition (March 2011 w/ Addendums through 2017).
It was determined that zinc-coating (cathodic protection) and polyethylene encasement are not warranted for
proposed ductile iron water mains at the Norton Ranch Subdivision Phase 5. The Design Decision Model (DDM)
by Corrpro and the Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association (DIPRA) was used in conjunction with soils test
results provided by Energy Laboratories in Billings, MT to determine whether zinc-coated pipe would be
warranted for this project.
The DDM requires the calculation of two site-specific factors; the Likelihood Score and the Consequence Score.
Based on the soils test results, the average Likelihood Score for the two soil samples obtained was calculated as
18.5, with no individual sample score greater than 21. The Consequence Score was calculated to be 11. Using
these two scores and the DDM Two-Dimensional Matrix (see attached Figure 1) it was determined that zinc-
coating and polyethylene wrap are not warranted. The DDM Two-Dimensional Matrix yields a recommendation
of Category 1. The recommendation for Category 1 is that the manufacture’s shop coat is sufficient (see attached
Table 1).
If you require any further information, please give me a call at (406) 587-1115.
Sincerely:
Drew Kirsch, E.I.

DIPRA and Corrpro again listened to the needs of utility
operators and recognized the differences between long,
large diameter, straight-run transmission mains and the
more complicated networks of distribution pipelines that
bring water to our neighborhoods and businesses. The result
provides a more practical solution for pipeline networks that
comprise the distribution systems within a utility’s service
area. The use of V-Bio® enhanced polyethylene encasement
in conjunction with metallized zinc provides water operators
with an effective alternative to controlling corrosion in
distribution systems.

temperature for shipping container 2 was 5.6°C with ice.
The samples for Dissolved Metals/Hardness were subsampled, filtered and preserved to pH <2 with 2 mL of nitric acid
per 250 mL in the laboratory. According to 40CFR136, samples for Dissolved Metals should be filtered and preserved
within 15 minutes of collection.

Lab measurement of analytes considered field parameters that require analysis within 15 minutes of sampling such as
pH, Dissolved Oxygen and Residual Chlorine, are qualified as being analyzed outside of recommended holding time.
Solid/soil samples are reported on a wet weight basis (as received) unless specifically indicated. If moisture corrected,
data units are typically noted as –dry. For agricultural and mining soil parameters/characteristics, all samples are dried
and ground prior to sample analysis.
Radiochemical precision results represent a 2-sigma Total Measurement Uncertainty.
