Good morning,
I am reaching out in regards to the growing issue on west Hemlock street. This
encampment is evolving into a safety concern as more campers park on the street,
and those already living there become more aware of our business and daily patterns.
Many of the situations we've observed from our office window, and the increasing
interactions we are having as we pass to and from work, eliminate our feelings of
safety and security on our property. Being a woman, these feelings are compounded.From the city, we ask for a number of resolutions:
- Provide safe housing and/or a designated encampment area with resources for
those in need. These people are currently without resources and have faced systemicissues which barr them from the privilege of housing. If they are going to live in
campers, they deserve to have the dignity of a bathroom, showers, and garbage
disposal services. Provision of such services have the dual benefit of maintaining the
area, and keeping the area they inhabit clean.
- Reallocate funds from policing to support services which provide toolsets to aid
people in escaping poverty rather than inciting violence. Continually relocating these
campers or not allowing these people anywhere will not provide a long term solution,or respect the difficult nature of the reality in which they live. Additional funding to the
assets the PD provides such as social services would be another additional benefit.
Overall, we hope to see a change on Hemlock street that allows us to go about ourjobs day to day without disruption or fear of violence, while ensuring the dignity of
those experiencing homelessness is maintained. Thank you for reading.
