2023, 6 PM, City Hall
I am writing to add to my first email (also dated Apr 25) re: the Bicycle Friendly
Bozeman presentation scheduled for the City's TAB meeting on Wed Apr, 26 (as
follows):
(1) Rumble strips should not be cut into the shoulders/bicycle lanes of paved roads,
and existing shoulder-cut rumble strips should be filled in on the paved roads where
they do exist. As everyone who routinely bicycles paved roads has learned, there is
often a relatively clean area just to the right of the white line separating the motor
vehicle driving lane from the road shoulder/bicycle lane. Shoulder-cut rumble strips
prevent this clean area from forming, and thus shoulder-cut rumble strips either force
bicyclists "left" into the motor vehicle driving lane or "right" into that part of theshoulder/bicycle lane that is typically filled with sharp gravel, glass, and other flat-
causing debris. In Bozeman, examples of shoulder-cut rumble strips that make
bicycling less friendly and less safe are on Springhill Rd north of Bozeman and the
sweeping, 90-degree curve on South 19th Ave on the way to Hyalite Canyon Rd.
(2) Newly chip-sealed roads and their shoulders/bicycle lanes should be cleaned off
completely a few days after the chip-sealing has been finished and then recleaned
frequently during the first month afterward. The sharp gravel used in chip-sealing can
cause frequent flats even when bicyclists are using very flat-resistant tires (with
tubes) such as Continental Gatorskins.
(3) Finally, please finish paving (or work with Gallatin County to finish paving)
McIlhattan Rd so that road cyclists have a relatively safe, completely paved route
between Bridger Canyon Dr and Sypes Canyon Rd/Springhill Rd.
