Dear Council Members,
Please reject the proposed ban on the sale and discharge of fireworks within the
Bozeman city limits. One of the great things about the 4th of July in Bozeman is
the ability of families to host their own small display of fireworks showing pride
in the USA and celebrating our Country’s birthday. To limit this to one public
display is unnecessary and impacts all Bozeman residents.
Celebrating the 4th of July is a long time Montana tradition and should not be
infringed upon by government officials unless there are clear and convincing
reasons for a ban. This proposal should be accompanied by the fire statistics for
fires generated by fireworks in the city. The fire chief mentions in his
interview with the Chronicle that he is concerned with drought conditions but
Bozeman residents heeded his call to limit fireworks displays during the last
drought and should be expected to do so, if and when, we have another drought.
Instead of calling for a blanket ban, perhaps the City could reduce the number
of days/hours during which fireworks can be used over the holiday. This would
reduce noise calls and confusion as to when fireworks are allowed.
Respectively submitted,
Donna Upton
Bozeman Resident
