Good morning,
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Coral Construction Company
will begin installing high-tension median cable rail along Interstate 90 (I 90) in the
Bozeman area this spring, as weather permits. The project spans just more than 40
miles, from Three Forks east to Bear Canyon.
This project is one phase of a four-phase project that will install median high-tension
cable rail across 150 miles of interstate, including sections of Interstate 90 (I 90) inthe Missoula, Butte, and Bozeman areas and I 15 in the Butte and Helena areas. The
Missoula and Bozeman areas are the first phases to be constructed, starting this
year.
Built with safety in mind, median high-tension cable rail is a flexible barrier of steel
cable mounted on steel posts in the center median that has been proven to reduce
the severity of crashes and prevent fatal crashes caused by vehicles crossing themedian into oncoming traffic.
Minimal travel impacts are anticipated; however, minor travel time delays are
expected. Motorists should expect single-lane closures and reduced speeds when
passing through active work zones. Crews will be on-site Monday to Saturday, and
occasionally during nighttime hours. This phase is expected to be completed in 2024;
however, this schedule is subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen
circumstances.
This project is one component of MDT’s Vision Zero mission, an ongoing statewide
collaboration among hundreds of agencies and organizations striving for zero deaths
and zero serious injuries on Montana’s roadways.
Weekly email project updates will commence when construction gets underway. If

“You play a role in work zone safety. Work with us.”
In 2020, 857 people were killed in 774 fatal work zone crashes, according to the most
recent data available from workzonesafety.org. MDT reminds you to use extra
caution while traveling through work zones by minimizing distractions and
following posted speed limits.
