HISTORIC PROPERTY/ARCHITECTURE DESCRIPTION PROPERTY TYPEii ARCHITECTURAL STYLE TIME PERIOD Historic Residence Vernacular, Gable-Front Form 1910-1919 ARCHITECT NAME/FIRM ARCHITECT CITY, STATE BUILDER NAME/COMPANY BUILDER CITY, STATE CONSTRUCTION DATE Unknown Unknown Unknown Unknown 1912 NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY The site consists of three architectural features: a gable-front residence (F1) built c. 1912, a detached garage (F2) constructed c. 1970, and a modern prefabricated shed (F3). The property is located north of downtown along North Tracy Avenue, on an interior lot between West Short Street and West Peach Street. The Gallatin County Fairgrounds is three blocks to the north. The lot measures 50 feet across and mature deciduous trees line the south and north property boundary. The site was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and was considered a "contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development" (McDonald 1984). In 1987, the property was added to the NRHP as a contributing property within the North Tracy Historic District (24GA951). McDonald described the residence as follows: "This detached one-and-one-half story single-family porch-and-gable-fronted cottage has a square plan with an open front hip- roofed porch with three square posts. The one-bay façade is asymmetrical and consists of an off-center glass-paned front entrance flanked by two fixed windows with a 1/1 sash arrangement, both on the same side. The upper half-story features one central double-hung window with a 1/1 sash arrangement. The frame construction is finished in drop siding, painted cream-beige with medium brown trim. The house rests on a cut stone foundation. The gable roof is covered with cedar shingles and has one central brick chimney. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. The porch roof is hipped." The site was updated in 1985 by Matt Cohen, who noted several details that had changed since the recording by McDonald. The square porch posts had been replaced by turned posts and the detached garage was noted. Cohen also stated the fenestration of the residence had recently been completely altered. The site was subsequently updated at an unknown date. Additional details described at that time include fish scale wood shingles in the gable end, a cut stone foundation, boxed eaves, asphalt shingles, and globe finials at the apices. This update also described the outbuildings: "Outbuildings include a garage to the west, with a gable roof, frame construction, and clad in drop siding with corner boards; and a shed to the west, with an arched roof, metal construction, and clad in metal.” Metcalf staff revisited the site on September 6, 2022 and noted several alterations. The primary entrance on the east-facing facade is now a six-panel wood door. The window on the first story has been replaced by a pair of single-lite casement windows set in a simple wood surround. The second story window opening has been reduced in size and the window replaced with a single-lite casement window. The residence is currently described as follows: The one-and-a-half story residence is rectangular in plan and rests on a stone foundation. The exterior is clad in horizontal wood siding with vertical corner boards and imbricated decorative wood shingles in the gable peak. The roof is front gabled and clad in asphalt shingles. A globe finial is located at the apex of the front-facing gable. The façade faces east towards N. Tracy Avenue. An open, full-length porch with a hipped roof shelters the primary entrance. The porch roof is supported by three turned wood posts. The primary entrance is off-set slightly to the north and is composed of a six- panel wood door. To the south is a pair of single-lite casement windows with a simple wood surround. Above, in the second story is a single-lite casement window with a simple wood surround. The south elevation has a single-lite casement window with a simple wood surround. A window opening has been boarded over near the west end. An additional entrance, sheltered under a shed porch roof is visible. A single-lite window with a simple wood surround is above in the gable peak. The north elevation has a single-lite casement window with a simple wood surround near the west end. Feature 2 is a garage located northwest of the residence. The garage is rectangular in plan. The exterior is clad in horizontal wood siding with vertical corner boards and the front gabled roof is clad in wood shingles. The east-facing façade supports a pair of wood doors with a simple wood surround. The south elevation has no fenestration. The west elevation has a window of unknown type with a simple wood surround. The north elevation was not visible from the right-of-way. Feature 3 is a modern prefabricated shed clad in vertical raised seam metal panels and a gambrel roof with raised seam metal panels. A square opening faces south. The west elevation has no fenestration. The north and east elevations were not visible from the right-of-way. HISTORY OF PROPERTY (compiled by Crystal Alegria, The Extreme History Project, Bozeman, MT) The property currently addressed as 515 North Tracy Avenue is in Beall’s Third Addition, platted on December 28, 1891. The builder and designer of the residence are unknown. The site is associated with Bozeman’s historic African American community. African American families were moving west in the early twentieth century due to the great migration away from the southern United States. One of those families was the Halls, who settled in Bozeman on the north side of town. They joined other black community members, including the Rogers family, the McDonald family, the Smith family, and the Robinson family. Samuel V. Hall purchased this property on October 2, 1912. Samuel V. Hall was born on December 25, 1878, in Tennessee. Hall served in the Spanish War and the first World War. He married Elizabeth Norman on December 9, 1903, in Allen County, KS. Elizabeth Norman had been born on July 20, 1884, in Murfeesboro, Tennessee. The couple moved to Bozeman in c.1908 when they are first recorded living at 502 Ida Street. At this time, Samuel worked as a porter for the Gallatin Valley Commercial Club. By 1910, Samuel and Elizabeth lived at 21 E. Mendenhall Street in Bozeman and Samuel continued to work for the Gallatin Valley Commercial Club (R. L. Polk & Co., 1908, 1910). In 1912, the couple purchased this property. While living in this residence, Samuel worked as a janitor, bartender, laborer, attendant at the Elks Home, and as a porter. In 1914, they welcomed their first daughter, Elizabeth "Eureka" Hall. Next came Samuel Hall Jr., who was born on May 20, 1915. A second son, LaVern, was born on December 14, 1916, followed by a third, James "Maurice" on January 31, 1919. A daughter, Hattie, was born on January 17, 1922. Shortly after the birth of Hattie, the Hall family moved back to Iola, KS, where Samuel and Elizabeth had been married. They sold this property on May 4, 1922. The Hall children grew up in Iola, KS. Young Samuel Jr. died in 1927 at the age of 12 years, possibly of a fever (The Iola Register, 15 July 1927). The remainder of the children attended Iola schools, and all remained in Kansas the rest of their lives. Samuel V. died in December 1941 in Iola, KS. His funeral was at the A.M.E. Church in Iola, and he was buried in Iola’s Highland Cemetery (The Iola Register, 22 December 1941). After Samuel’s death, Elizabeth Hall moved to Junction City, KS in 1953. She was a member of the Iola Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she served on the Senior Stewardess Board for many years. Elizabeth died on January 20, 1969, in Junction City, KS. She was buried in the family plot in Highland Cemetery (The Iola Register, 23 January 1969). LaVern Hall served in the second World War. He worked for the City of Iola before he moved to Wichita, KS where he worked for the city before he retired. He was buried in the family plot in Highland Cemetery (The Iola Register, 20 July 1993). James "Maurice" Hall lived in Iola, KS until he moved to Junction City, KS in the late 1950s, probably about the same time as his mother. He served in the second World War, in the Army. Maurice died on November 14, 1974 and was buried in the family plot in Highland Cemetery (The Iola Register, 16 November 1974). Hattie Hall was a 1942 graduate of Iola High School. She eventually moved to Junction City, KS. On October 24, 1950, she married Staff Sargent, Scottie Dowell in Fayetteville, AK. Hattie died on February 18, 1995, in Junction City, KS and was buried at the Fort Riley Post Cemetery at Fort Riley, Kansas (Findagrave.com, 2022). Elizabeth "Eureka" Hall married and lived most of her life in Iola, KS. In 1981, when she was 84 years old, a newspaper interviewed Eureka about her experiences AER FORM 1 ARCHITECTURE & ENGINEERING RECORD PAGE 4 of 6 7/2022 STATE HISTORIC PRESERVATION OFFICE (SHPO) | 1301 E Lockey, PO Box 201202 – Helena, MT 59620-1202 | (406) 444-7715 – mtshpo@mt.gov Ver. 7/2022 | https://mhs.mt.gov/Shpo/docs/AERform1.pdf growing up as a black woman in Kansas during the 1930s. She told the newspaper that Allen County, KS had an active group of Ku Klux Klan that terrorized her family and other black families in the area. She remembered that the Klan "tried to prevent her father from owning a tailor shop on the square in Iola. Every day when he would go to work, he would find his store vandalized. However, her father was a stubborn man and fought for his right to own a business until he died. After the death of her father, the Klan still terrorized her family. Tom Christie, a black policeman [in Iola], would tell Eureka’s mother when the Klan was planning on coming. He would tell her to keep her children quiet and the Klan would quit bothering her since she was widow” (The Iola Register, 29 October 1981). Eureka married and raised nine children in Iola. She died at the age of 92 years on May 24, 2001 (Ancestry.com, 2015). Mary K. Nelson purchased this property from Samuel Hall on May 04, 1922. During ownership, Mary and George Nelson did not live in this property but rented it out to other individuals and families. In 1930, they were living two houses north, at 519 N. Tracy. On January 21, 1938, Mary Nelson sold this property to Cecile Symmonds. Cecile Symmonds did not live in the residence during ownership but used it as a rental property. The Symmonds family owned the property until 1985, when they sold it to Julian Degidio Jr. and Maureen E. Degidio. Julian and Maureen Degidio owned the property until 1990, when they sold it to Leslie J. Johnson and Roland E. Schmidt. Johnson and Schmidt sold the property to Gayle Mauer Weisberger and Lan Weisberger in 1992. In 1995, the Weisbergers sold the property to Charles G. Champe and Ann H. Haller, who are the current owners as of August 2022.
