NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY
This site consists of two historic architectural features: a hipped-roof box residence (F1) built between 1904 and 1906, and a
detached garage (F2) built c. 1960. The residence is located north of downtown, along North Bozeman Avenue, between East Peach
and East Cottonwood Streets. Beall Park is one block to the south and the Gallatin County Fairgrounds are two blocks to the north.
The lot measures 50 feet across; a large deciduous tree shades the east-facing façade.
The site was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and was defined as a "neutral element within a potential
historic district" (McDonald 1984). McDonald described the residence as follows:
"This detached one-story single-family residence has a rectangular plan with a shed-roofed open front porch. The one-bay façade is
symmetrical and consists of a central glass-paned front entrance flanked by one leaded glass fixed window and one window not
visible. The porch has a wood parapet and lattice underneath. There is also a gable decoration on the roof over the door and is
supported by four turned posts. The frame construction is finished in asbestos siding and rests on a rubble foundation. The hipped
roof is covered with grey-green asphalt shingles and features boxed, overhanging eaves. Outbuildings include a garage."
Metcalf revisited the site on September 8, 2022, and noted a small addition added to the rear (west) elevation. The residence is
currently described as follows:
The single-story residence is rectangular in plan and rests on a concrete foundation. The exterior is mostly clad in horizontally
oriented asbestos siding, the rear addition has horizontal vinyl siding with vertical corner boards. The main portion of the roof is
hipped; the rear addition has a shed roof, and the porch has a hipped roof with a centered decorative gable. All roofs are clad in asphalt shingles.
The façade faces east towards N. Bozeman Avenue. The primary entrance is centered under a hipped roof porch which is supported
by four turned wood posts. The porch railing is composed of vertical paneled wood and a wood lattice extends down to the concrete
block porch foundation. The entrance is a paneled wood door with inset lite and a simple wood surround. To the north is a one-over-one lite wood window and to the south is a fixed lite wood window with a stained-glass transom. Both windows have simple wood
surrounds.
The south elevation has two, one-over-one lite wood windows with simple wood surrounds and wood sills. A one-by-one lite sliding
window and an awning style window are at the west end, both with simple wood surrounds. Two rectangular window openings are
visible along the foundation.
The rear (west) elevation was partially visible from the right-of-way. The elevation has an additional entrance accessed by wood
steps with a simple wood railing.
The north elevation is partially obscured by vegetation. It supports at least two, one-over-one lite wood windows with simple wood
surrounds.
Feature 2 is a front gabled, detached garage. The exterior is clad in vertical wood siding, with vertical wood-grained siding in the
gable peak. The east facing-facade supports a double-stall overhead door. The north, south, and west elevations were not visible
from the public right-of-way. A gravel driveway extends along the south property line and a concrete pad is in front of the garage.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
(Compiled by Crystal Alegria, The Extreme History Project, Bozeman, MT)
The property currently addressed as 611 North Bozeman Avenue is located in the Imes Addition that was platted on August 21, 1890
by Louis F. Menage and Amanda Menage. The builder and designer of the residence are unknown. The site is associated with
Bozeman’s historic African American community.
As the town of Bozeman, Montana Territory was settled in 1864, people came to this area from all over the United States and the
world to settle. Many African American people came to Montana Territory at this time for opportunity and a chance at a better life,
many of them being recently freed after the Civil War. Bozeman did not have the black population of Helena, and later Butte, but it
did have a significant number of African American people settling in the area who were able to find property to purchase and work
in the late nineteenth century. One of the African American families to settle in Bozeman was the Rogers (or Rodgers) family. This
property is connected to the Rogers family through William, a stepson of Eli Rogers. William and Mary Barnes lived in this house, and
Mary Barnes, a black woman, owned the property for many years.
Mary Barnes purchased this property on June 7, 1902. According to the Sanborn maps, a structure was built on this property after
1904 and before 1912 during the time of Mary Barnes’ ownership. It is hard to track the life of Mary Barnes through records, as they
are extremely sparse. Mary Taylor had married William Barnes on April 25, 1900 in the newly built Anaconda Courthouse in
Anaconda, MT by the Justice of the Peace, William Devine (The Anaconda Standard, 26 April 1900). In the 1900 census, William and
Mary Barnes boarded with William’s sister, Lulu and her husband Walter Harrison in Anaconda. William worked as a laborer and
Walter Harrison worked as a machinist (ancestry.com, 2004). Two years later, Mary Barnes purchased this property in 1902, and
according to the city directory they were living in a residence located at 262 Montana avenue in Bozeman at this time. By 1906, Mary
and William Barnes lived in a residence on this property. While living in this residence from 1906 to 1912 William worked as a
laborer and a janitor (R.L. Polk & Co., 1902, 1906, 1908, 1910, 1912). There is no listing of Mary and William Barnes living in
Bozeman in 1914. Walter Anderson lived at 611 n. Bozeman at this time. In 1916, Frank and Fannie hill lived in the residence. Fannie
worked as a laundress at the Gallatin Laundry Company. In 1918, Justus Evans and Andrew Peterson lived in the residence. Evans
worked as a laborer and Peterson worked as a hostler for the Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1922, Herbert Herris, a rancher, lived in
the residence (R. L. Polk & Co., 1914 to 1922). Mary Barnes continued to own the property but did not live in the residence during
the remainder of ownership.
The husband of Mary Barnes, William, was born in 1876, in Montana to Emma Barnes. William’s mother, Emma Barnes, had been
born in Fort Benton, Montana Territory in approximately 1859 (ancestry.com, 2010). She was most likely the child of Philip Barnes
and a Native American woman whose name has been lost to time. Phillip Barnes was an African American man who had been born
in Alabama and made his way to Fort Benton where he worked as a laborer. Barnes was listed as a member of the Fort Benton
community in the winter of 1862-1863 (Leeson, 1885). Johnny Grant, of Grant-Kohrs Ranch Association, may have known Phillip
Barnes or known of him. In his memoir, Johnny Grant mentions that on one of his trips to Fort Benton, a black man came to him and
said, "Mr. Grant, old Phil Barnes is dead and you are kind-hearted. You better take his children for they are starving around here."
Grant took the oldest boy, named Jack, and was going to leave the two girls behind but they cried for their brother, so Grant took
them as well. He had a soft spot for children and adopted many over the years. He went on to say, "When I came to Manitoba I left
the oldest girl in Montana and brought the other two” (Grant 2008). The youngest Barnes sibling was named Annie. Annie Barnes
died in Canada in 1876. But Jack survived to grow up and marry and has descendants living in Canada today (great-grandson of jack
Barnes, personal communication 2022).
Emma Barnes was the older sibling, who remained in Montana, where she entered the archival record when she was listed in
Bozeman’s 1880 census as residing in Bozeman and working as a laundress. She had four children living with her, including Lulu,
Berry, William, and Charles (Ancestry.com, 2010). On December 16 of that same year, 1880, Emma married Eli rogers (Ancestry.com,
2014). Eli Rogers had been born in 1832 in Nashville, Tennessee (Ancestry.com, 2010). He came west, settling in Bozeman in 1879 (R.
L. Polk & Co., 1892). Eli worked as a day laborer throughout his life, but he did own the house he lived in on North Black Avenue in
Bozeman, now addressed as 518 N. Black Avenue.
William Barnes grew up at the Rogers family house at 518 N. Black, the son of Emma Barnes and the stepson of Eli Rogers. This
property, at 611 N. Bozeman is just one street over and a block down from where William was raised.

Mary Barnes owned this property until Violet Harrison took over the deed on March 29, 1948 via a county treasurer’s tax deed; she
paid $3 for the property. Violet Harrison was the niece of Mary Barnes.
Violet Harrison had been born on September 27, 1893 to Charles and Lulu Barnes Mayo. Her mother, Lulu Barnes Mayo, divorced
Charles Mayo and married Walter Jacy Harrison in 1896 (The Weekly Avant Courier, 28 October 1896). Violet was raised by Walter
Harrison and took his last name. Violet, with her family, lived in Anaconda for a brief time in 1900. By 1906, Lulu and Violet were
back in Bozeman and living at 202 N. Wallace Avenue. In 1908, they lived at 316 N. Bozeman Avenue (R. L. Polk & Co., 1906, 1908). In
1910 and 1912, the family lived at 316 N. Bozeman (this residence no longer exists, it was torn down prior to 2022), (R. L. Polk & Co.,
1912). By 1916, the Harrison family lived just down the street from 611 N. Bozeman, at 621 N. Bozeman. Violet Harrison moved to
Cincinnati, Ohio and became a teacher. She lived in Cincinnati until her death on January 21, 1980 (Ancestry.com, 2014). Violet sold
this property to David F. and Ada l. Delap on March 16, 1957.
David and Ada Delap sold the property to Marvin F. and Dollie M. Showalter on December 17, 1957. Marvin and Dollie Showalter
lived in the residence on this property during ownership. Dollie Covey had been born May 1, 1921 in Bozeman, MT to Elijah and Lucy
Covey. She attended schools in the Bozeman area. Her family farmed throughout the Gallatin Valley, including in Anceney,
Manhattan, and Springhill. Dollie married Marvin Showalter on April 17, 1942 in Bozeman (findagrave.com, 2022). Marvin Showalter
had been born on March 26, 1919 in Gardner, Kansas to Lee Otis and Lucy Showalter. He attended school in Johnson County, Kansas.
He moved to Bozeman in 1938. Marvin worked in the construction business as a carpenter while residing in this residence.
Showalter served in the second world war as an airplane mechanic (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 20 December 2003).
Dollie and Marvin Showalter sold this property to Geoffrey T. Hill and Courtney M. Bazaire on August 30, 1999. On December 11,
2000, Hill and Bazaire sold the property to Barbara M. Cestero, the current owner as of August 2022.
