HISTORIC PROPERTY/ARCHITECTURE DESCRIPTION PROPERTY TYPEii ARCHITECTURAL STYLE TIME PERIOD Historic Residence Classical Cottage Historic More Than One Decade ARCHITECT NAME/FIRM ARCHITECT CITY, STATE BUILDER NAME/COMPANY BUILDER CITY, STATE CONSTRUCTION DATE Unknown Unknown Unknown Unknown 1884-1898 NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY The site consists of one historic architectural feature: a residence built between 1884-1898 in the classical cottage style (F1). The site is located north of downtown at the southwest corner of the intersection of North Bozeman Avenue and East Peach Street. Beall Park is one block to the south. The lot measures 90 feet along East Peach Street and 65 feet along North Bozeman Avenue. A large bush hides the main entrance on the east-facing façade. The site was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and was considered a "contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the civic phase of Bozeman’s historic/architectural development" (McDonald 1984). McDonald described the residence as follows: "This detached one-story single-family residence has a Greek cross plan which includes a hipped-roofed addition on the north and a shed addition to the south, along with a gable-roofed bay on the front and three shed-roof entry porches. The three-bay façade is asymmetrical and consists of an offset front entrance with fixed and double-hung windows in the bay. There are decorative corner brackets with a leaf motif and carvings in the woodwork on the front and side entry porches. There are also diamond-designed shingles in the gable ends of the bay. The frame construction is finished in stucco and rests on a concrete foundation, which extends 8" beyond the frame all the way around. The hipped roof is covered with cedar shingles and features boxed eaves." Metcalf staff revisited the site on September 8, 2022 and noted some changes since the previous recording. The stucco cladding has been removed from most of the residence, exposing red brick. The south addition remains clad in stucco. Windows have been replaced with one-over-one lite vinyl windows; one window on the south addition is a single-lite fixed vinyl window. The windows retain their original openings and are set in wood surrounds with wood sills. The porch on the east-facing facade has been enlarged and the roof changed to a shed style with open eaves exposing rafter ends; some decorative corner brackets have been retained. The shed-roofed porch on the north elevation has been removed. The site is currently described as follows: The single-story residence has an irregular plan and rests on brick foundation covered with concrete. The concrete cladding is chipped away in multiple locations exposing the brick foundation underneath. The exterior is clad in a mixture of red brick and stucco; a front gable end on the east elevation is clad in decorative wood shingles. The primary roof is hipped and clad in wood shingles; a front-facing gable extends out to the east and an addition the south elevation has a shed roof clad in asphalt shingles. The roof ridges are covered in metal and decorative metal, globe finials are located at the apices of the roof and front-facing gable. A plain frieze band runs underneath the slightly overhanging eaves. A metal chimney extends from the south roof slope. The façade faces east towards N. Bozeman Avenue. The primary entrance is at the north end of the elevation, beneath a shed-style porch roof. The porch roof is supported by two, square wood posts with carved, decorative wood brackets. The eaves of the porch are open, exposing the wood rafter ends. The primary entrance is a paneled wood door with an inset lite and a single-lite transom above. To the south, a portion of the residence extends out the east under a front-facing gable. The north, east, and south elevations of the gable end support four, one-over-one lite vinyl windows with wood sills and segmental arch brick lintels. The south elevation supports a stucco-clad addition at the west end. On the main portion is a one-by-one lite wood window. The addition has a fixed, single-lite vinyl window, a paneled wood door, and a pair of one-over-one lite wood windows. The west elevation has a shed-roofed porch supported by two, square wood posts; the eaves of the porch roof are open, exposing wood rafter ends. Below the porch roof is an additional entrance composed of a paneled wood door and a transom above. Between the two sets of windows is an additional entrance with a paneled wood door and a transom above. HISTORY OF PROPERTY (compiled by Crystal Alegria, The Extreme History Project, Bozeman, MT) The property currently addressed as 541 North Bozeman Avenue is in Beall’s Second Addition, platted by William J. Beall on June 8, 1885. The builder and designer of the residence is unknown. The site is associated with Bozeman’s historic African-American community. The residence on this property was built after a Bozeman Birdseye View drawing was done in 1884 by J. J. Stoner. This Birdseye shows that the location of the lot is filled with trees and no structures are present. In a c.1898 Bozeman Birdseye View drawn by Augustus Koch, the dwelling is illustrated. The 1904 Sanborn Map shows a one-story brick dwelling on the property with no outbuildings. Rosa and Madison M. Black sold this property to D. C. Campbell on February 15, 1887. D. C. Campbell, a lawyer, sold the property to Ida Winchester the same day, February 15, 1887. Ida Winchester owned the property until December 13, 1887, when she sold it to Ollie (or Allie) Benson. Ollie/Allie/Alice Benson was a prostitute that arrived in Bozeman c. 1884. She lived in Bozeman’s red-light district on Mendenhall Street. Her name was mentioned in the newspaper quite frequently during her short time in Bozeman. Violence was common in Bozeman’s red-light district and Ollie Benson was often in the middle of it. In 1884, she was attacked by fellow prostitute, Reta Anderson. Reta assaulted Ollie and was fined $50 but Ollie was also charged with disturbing the peace and fighting in the corridor of the police court (The Bozeman Weekly Chronicle, 30 April 1884). In 1886, Ollie committed a much more serious crime against another woman, Lena Stanley. The two had a fight and Ollie Benson fired three gunshots into Lena Stanley, luckily none of them were fatal. The case against Ollie Benson was eventually dismissed by the Judge for lack of evidence (The Bozeman Weekly Chronicle, 04 August 1886). It is unclear if Ollie Benson lived in this property during ownership. She moved out of state and married John Foster on October 22, 1889, in Arkansas (Ancestry.com, 2011). Ollie Benson Foster sold this property to Cephas W. Haskins on September 16, 1897. At this time, she was living with husband, John Foster in Pueblo, CO. Cephas W. Haskins was born at Ellsworth, Ohio on September 21, 1844. In 1863, he ventured to Wisconsin and the following year to Montana Territory, settling in Bozeman, MT. For a time, he lived in Helena, MT and then Three Forks, MT. Cephas married Katie Eugenia Bell on December 17, 1879 in Willow Creek, MT. In 1890, Cephas and Katie moved back to Bozeman. While in Bozeman and during ownership of this property, he worked in real estate and insurance. Cephas was a member of the Gallatin County Pioneers Society since its inception (The Butte Miner, 06 May 1910). Frank Harold Haskins, the son of Cephas W. Haskins, and wife Clorenia received this property. They sold it to A. T. Rutledge on June 21, 1918. Matthew Walker, an African American man, arrived in Bozeman in c. 1910 and opened shoeshine parlors. Matthew Walker, along with his wife Jennie, who was also black, lived in this residence from around 1914 to 1917 (R. L. Polk & Co., 1910, 1914, 1916). Matt was born in 1879 in North Carolina. In 1910, he worked as a cook at a hotel (Ancestry.com, 2006). He was a shoe shiner and owned his own shoe shining parlors in Bozeman. He died in April of 1917 from pneumonia at the young age of 38 years old (The Weekly Courier, 18 April 1917). He left behind his wife, Jennie; the couple had no children. Jennie Walker was born in c. 1888 in Camden, Missouri. After Matthew’s death, Jennie Walker continued to live in Bozeman. In 1920, she lived at 407 South Bozeman Avenue and worked as a maid in various houses (Ancestry.com, 2010). Jennie Walker married Charles Hall on September 2, 1923 in Bozeman (Ancestry.com, 2017). By 1930, the couple had moved to Livingston, MT (Ancestry.com, 2002). A. T. Rutledge was born in Illinois on October 29, 1870. He lived in Bozeman, MT from approximately 1905 until his death in 1930. He was in the banking and real estate business during his time in Bozeman, being a member of the Security Bank and Trust Company (The Billings Gazette, 04 November 1930). He most likely purchased this property as a real estate investment as he did not live in the property during ownership. Rutledge sold this property to Ellery H. Mileham on August 28, 1920. Fred Rogers was born in Bozeman, MT on November 25, 1887 to Eli and Emma Barnes Rogers. Fred grew up on Black Avenue and was a member of Bozeman’s African American community. On February 20, 1913, Fred Rogers married Julia "Jewell" Watterson who was also of African American descent. Julia had been born in Knoxville, TN to Fannie and Dan Watterson (Ancestry.com, 2017). The couple lived at 606 North Black before moving into this residence. Fred Rogers life came to a violent end in this house in November of 1919. Fred, Julia and two friends, Sam and Laura Heard, and Fred’s father, Eli Rogers, were at the house on the evening of November 5, 1919. Fred and Sam Heard were playing checkers while Julia and Laura Heard were busy in the house. They heard a persistent knocking at the front door. Fred left his game of checkers and went to the front door. Upon opening the door, he received the full charge of a 12-gauge shotgun blast straight into his chest. He fell to the floor crying, "Papa, Papa, I’m shot." He died on the floor where he fell before the doctor could arrive. The man who shot him, Richard Ward, was also a member of Bozeman’s African American community. He was born and raised on the south side of Bozeman at 308 South Bozeman by his grandmother, Mary McDonald, and mother, Mollie McDonald. The two men, Fred Rogers and Richard Ward must have grown up together in Bozeman. The quarrel, according to the newspaper report, was over a small sum of money, about $3.40, which Ward claimed Rogers owed him. Ward was later arrested at his home on Mendenhall Street in Bozeman. Richard Ward wrote a note to his family and wife, Willie Ward, before he committed the murder. The note said "Dear Folks; am very sorry this had to happen but I cannot help it. Goodbye to all of you and love, Dick." One note was addressed to his grandmother, Mary McDonald, and one to his wife, Willie Burden Ward. Richard Ward was convicted of the murder of Fred Rogers and sent first to county jail in Bozeman, and then to Montana’s state prison in Deer Lodge, MT. Richard Ward died in 1937. Shortly before his death, he was released to his grandmother and mother in Bozeman and was able to die at his home at 308 South Tracy. He is buried in Bozeman’s Sunset Hills Cemetery (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 12 November 1919). A year after Fred’s murder, Julia Rogers married Columbus D. Joseph on March 23, 1920. They lived at 264 Montana Avenue in Bozeman, MT in 1920. Julia did housework for private families (Ancestry.com, 2010) (Ancestry.com, 2016). Bess Holland and James Smith purchased this property in the 1920s. Bess Holland was born in c. 1894 in Missouri to John and Alice Holland. She taught school at Salesville, MT (now Gallatin Gateway) for several years and was a member of the Rural Teachers Association. James Smith came to Montana in about 1908. He worked as a police officer in Bozeman, as both a patrolman and as Chief of the department. He eventually became Sheriff of Gallatin County. The two were married on January 4, 1923, in Townsend, MT (The Butte Miner, 05 January 1923). Mary (Herrin) Ping purchased this property on October 1, 1930, from Bess Holland and James Smith. Mary Herrin was born on December 19, 1867 in Pulaski County, KY (Findagrave.com, 2022). She was married to George M. Ping on March 21, 1889, also in Pulaski, KY (Ancestry.com, 2016). Mary Ping died on September 2, 1942, in Bozeman, MT and is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery (Findagrave.com, 2022). Mary Ping sold this property to her daughter-in-law, May (Kappes) Ping on September 18, 1933. May Kappes was born on October 21, 1901 in Miles City, MT to Michael and Matilda LaDuke Kappes. May Kappes moved to Bozeman as a small child with her family, and attended Bozeman schools. She married Adolph Ping on April 8, 1922 in Livingston, MT. May and Adolph Ping lived in this residence from 1931 to 1933 (R. L. Polk & Co., 1931, 1933). Adolph Ping died on July 10, 1933 of a skull fracture in an auto accident near Toston, MT. May Ping married Meredith "Mack" C. Sellards on June 23, 1939 in Butte MT. From approximately 1937 to 1963, May Ping Sellards owned the Old Faithful Bar in Gallatin Gateway. She was also a real estate mogul, buying and selling many houses on the north side of Bozeman. She sold the Old Faithful Bar to Stacey and Phyllis Crosby, and it became "Stacey’s Bar." May was a member of the American Legion, Eagles, and the VFW auxiliaries (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 26 March, 1987). Her husband, Meredith C. Sellards, was born on June 27, 1909, in New Madrid, MO to John R. and Ethel Crews Sellards. Meredith entered the service on September 24, 1943. He served as staff sergeant in the 23rd replacement depot medical section (The Independent- Record, 04 November 1969). May Ping sold this property to Frank J. and Eileen J. Kountz on October 6, 1976. Frank Joseph Kountz was born on October 27, 1921 in Whitehall, MT to Frank and Charlotte Kountz. He attended high school in Whitehall and came to Bozeman, MT to attend Montana State University. In Whitehall, Frank owned and operated International Implement and was involved in ranching in both the Whitehall and Bozeman areas. Frank married Eileen Henderson on September 2, 1976 (Belgrade News, 08 February 2005). Eileen (Davidsen) Henderson Kountz was born on October 28, 1931, to Martin and Flora Davidsen in Fairview, MT. She attended schools in Fairview. Eileen first married Jim Henderson and they settled in Bozeman, MT. Eileen worked at Woolworth’s as a baker, and as a bookkeeper at Rudy’s Distributing (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 27 December 2015).
