NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY
The site consists of two historic architectural features: a residence (F1) built c. 1900 and a detached garage (F2) built c. 1947. The
site is located north of downtown Bozeman, along Bozeman Avenue, between East Peach Street and East Short Street. Beall Park is
a half block to the south. The residence is located on a 50-foot lot; a mature deciduous tree shades the southwest corner of the lot.
The site was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and was considered an "intrusive element within a potential historic district" (McDonald 1984). McDonald described the house as follows:
"This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular plan with a flat-roofed stoop on the side. The one-
bay façade is symmetrical and consists of three double-hung windows with a 1/1 sash arrangement, two side by side on the first
level, and one in the center of the second level. The front entrance is located on the side under the flat roof of the stoop. The frame
construction is finished in asbestos shingles and rests on a rubble foundation. The gable roof is covered with green asphalt shingles
and features boxed, overhanging eaves. There are two (central-rear) metal stovepipes. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the
street. Outbuildings include a new garage."
Metcalf staff revisited the site on September 8, 2022 and noted some alterations since the previous recording. The site is currently
described as follows:
The one-and-a-half story residence is rectangular in plan and rests on a concrete foundation. The exterior is clad in horizontal
Masonite siding with vertical corner boards. The roof is front gabled and clad in asphalt shingles, a small addition to the rear (east)
elevation has a shed style roof.
The façade faces south, and the primary entrance is at the west corner. The entrance is sheltered under a flat porch roof clad in
corrugated metal. The porch roof is supported from above by two metal chains and from below by two triangular wood brackets. To
the west is a one-over-one lite vinyl window and a fixed lite window, both with simple wood surrounds. At the east end of the
elevation in the shed roof addition, is an additional entrance.
The east elevation was not visible from the right-of-way.
The north elevation has a small single-lite vinyl window on the first story and a vinyl casement window on the second story. Both
windows have simple wood surrounds.
The west elevation faces N. Bozeman Avenue. The first story has a pair of one-over-one lite vinyl windows and the second story has
a one-over-one lite vinyl window with a simple wood surround.
Feature 2 is a single stall detached garage at the east end of the property. The garage is rectangular in plan, is clad in horizontal
wood siding with vertical corner boards, and supports a front gabled roof clad in asphalt shingles. A metal stovepipe extends from
the east end of the roof. The primary facade faces west and supports an off-center single-stall metal overhead door. The north
elevation has no fenestration. The east and south elevations were not visible from the public right-of-way. A gravel driveway
extends along the north elevation of the residence to the garage.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY
(compiled by Crystal Alegria, The Extreme History Project, Bozeman, MT)
The property currently addressed as 516 North Bozeman Avenue is in Beall’s First Addition, surveyed on December 5 and 6, 1870 by
Samuel Reed as Beall’s Addition. The site is associated with Bozeman’s historic African American community.
Joseph M. Ward purchased this property from A. D. Greasey on December 8, 1900, and most likely built the residence on the
property during ownership. Joseph Ward was born on June 3, 1866, in Louisa, Kentucky (Ancestry.com, 2012). He married Florentine
Roach on November 5, 1888, in Cabell County, West Virginia. Joseph and Florentine Ward lived in this residence in 1902; he worked
as a laborer (R. L. Polk & Co., 1902) and as a stone mason and plasterer (Ancestry.com, 2001). Joseph Ward sold this property on
January 7, 1903, to George Stang.
George Stang was born on October 30, 1878, in Minnesota. As a child, he moved to Montana with his family. On January 4, 1909, he
married Hannah Sharon in Bozeman, MT. Shortly after marriage, the couple moved to Meridian, ID (The Idaho Statesman, 23 August
1956). George Stang lost this property in a Sheriff’s sale, and it was taken over by Western Loan and Building Company on May 22,
1908 through a sheriff’s deed.
African American families were moving west in the early twentieth century due to the great migration away from the southern
United States. The Ellison/Robinson family was one of those families that settled in the Bozeman, MT area, on the north side of
town. They joined other black community members including the Rogers, McDonald, Smith, and Hall families, to name a few.
Western Loan and Building Company sold the property to Andrew “Andy” Robinson on January 3, 1918. Andrew T. Robinson was
born in 1883, the son of Laura and Tony Robinson. He married Eva Ellison on May 19, 1912, in Bozeman, Montana. They had one
child, Hattie Robinson, during their marriage. Andy and Eva Robinson divorced on August 17, 1918 (Ancestry.com, 2016). Andy
Robinson sold this property to Eva Robinson on January 7, 1918. After their divorce, Andy moved out of the residence, but Eva
Robinson remained, along with her mother, Hattie, and her daughter, Hattie. They resided in the house during ownership.
Eva E. Robinson was born to Hattie Ellison in 1896 in Texas. She came to Montana with her mother. They first settled in Anaconda,
and then in Bozeman. While living in Bozeman, Eva and her mother Hattie worked as maids and did other domestic service work.
From 1922 to 1925, Eva Robinson worked as a maid at the Bozeman Elks Club. Other times, she worked as a hotel maid or a
domestic servant in private households. Both Eva Robinson and Hattie Ellison were very involved in the Montana Federation of
Colored Women’s Clubs. Eva served as the President of the Bozeman Sweet Pea Study Club, a chapter of the Montana State
Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs (R. L. Polk & Co., 1922, 1925). She also served as committee chairman for the Montana
Federation Jurisprudence Committee in 1922 and 1923. In 1922, Eva Robinson accompanied Mary Chappell, the Montana
Federation of Colored Women’s Clubs President, to Richmond, Virginia where they attended the national convention of the
federation as delegates from Montana (The Independent-Record, 04 August 1922). In 1924, the fourth annual Montana Federation
convention was held in Bozeman, MT and was hosted by the Sweet Pea Study Club of which Eva Robinson was president. Eva played
a large role in organizing the annual conference in Bozeman (The Butte Miner, 01 August 1924).
Hattie Missouri Ellison was born on October 13, 1871, to Thomas and Sierra Huston in Texas. She lived in Anaconda, MT with
daughter Hattie from approximately 1906 to 1911 (R. L. Polk & Co., 1906, 1912). While living in Anaconda, Hattie worked as a
laundress (ancestry.com, 2006). Hattie Ellison and daughter, Eva Robinson moved to Bozeman around 1912. Hattie lived with Eva
Robinson in this residence during her time in Bozeman. Hattie Ellison moved to Salt Lake City, UT with her daughter and
granddaughter in the late 1920s. While living in Salt Lake City, UT, she was a member of the Trinity African Methodist Episcopal
Church. She was treasurer of the Church Ladies Aid Society and member of the Nimble Thimble Club. She is buried in Mt. Olivet
Cemetery in Salt Lake City, UT (Salt lake Telegram, 03 February 1950).
Eva Robinson sold this property to Katherine Story on July 20, 1937. Katherine Story sold the property to Effie Glenney on July 27,
1937.

John Raymond Glenney was born in Illinois on May 20, 1888. He grew up in Tripp, SD. On July 29, 1912, he married Effie Maxon.
They lived on a farm near Tripp, SD until 1916 when they moved to Columbus, MT. In 1933, the Glenney family moved to Gallatin
Gateway, and in 1936 they came to Bozeman. John Glenney died in 1938, in this residence, of a heart attack (The Independent-
Record, 09 October 1938). Effie Glenney lived in this residence in 1940. Effie was born in Tripp, South Dakota on December 29, 1890
(The Montana Standard, 26 September 1968).
Effie Glenney sold the property to LeRoy and Viola Frederick on May 8, 1946. LeRoy and Viola lived in this residence during
ownership. Leroy worked as a service manager for Empire Auto & Implement Company (R. L. Polk & Co., 1948). The Fredericks sold
this property to Lawrence A. Wittman on December 14, 1948.
Lawrence Wittman sold this property to George A. and Mary A. Glueckert on January 12, 1951. George and Mary Glueckert sold this
property to William Fullerton on June 13, 1955. The Fullerton family sold the property to Michael A Donovan on February 4, 1972.
Donovan sold the property to Fred G Leibrand on October 18, 1977. James L Caffrey sold the property to Richard D and Gloria M
Stablein on August 9, 1978. Richard and Gloria Stablein sold the property to John G and Leona K Deane on March 30, 1990. John and
Leona Deane sold the property to David Weiss on June 28, 1998. David Weiss is the current owner of the property in August of
2022.

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
The rear addition impacts integrity of design. The addition of asbestos siding and new vinyl windows impacts integrity of materials to
a degree, as the replacement vinyl windows match the one-over-one lite configuration of the original wood windows. The site retains
integrity of location, setting, workmanship, feeling, and association. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic
associations.
ELIGIBILITY STATEMENT (continued):
Sect. 38.700.090 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion on the NRHP
or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. The property is not
within an existing historic district, and additional research is needed to evaluate the historic district potential of the neighborhood.
The property has therefore not been evaluated in reference to its contribution to a potential historic district.
POSSIBLE IMPACTS TO THE SITE
Nearby modern construction has the potential to impact integrity of setting within a historically working class neighborhood.
