NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION OF PROPERTY
The site consists of three features: a residence (F1) built circa 1904, a garage with apartment above (F2) constructed in 2015, and a
modern outbuilding (F3) added at an unknown date.
The site is located north of downtown on an interior lot north of the intersection of East Peach Street and North Black Avenue. The
Gallatin County Fairgrounds is three blocks to the north, and Beall Park is one block to the south. The lot measures 50 feet across
and two deciduous bushes are located in the front yard.
The site was previously recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects and was recommended as a neutral element within a
potential historic district (McDonald 1984). McDonald described the residence as follows:
"This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has an upright and wing style and T-shaped plan. There is a newer
enclosed front entry under the gable eaves and a shed-roofed addition to the rear. The two-bay façade is asymmetrical and consists
of an off-center glass-panel front entrance with sliding sash windows and a picture window - double-hung window on each story.
The frame construction is finished in hardboard siding and rests on a concrete-over-original foundation. The gable roof is covered
with gray T-lock pattern shingles and has flared eaves. There is a central brick chimney. Alterations include a wide horizontal siding,
large fixed window, and the enclosure of the front entry. Outbuildings include a garage."
Metcalf staff revisited the site on September 6, 2022 and noted some alterations since the previous recording. The gable roof over
the enclosed front entry has been extended to the east to cover a wood porch. The entrance has been replaced with a modern vinyl
door with an inset lite and the window to the north replaced with a six-over-six lite window. The window in the gable peak has been
replaced with a one-over-one lite vinyl window. A skylight has been added to the south slope of the east-facing gable. The residence
is currently described as follows:
The 1½ story residence is rectangular in plan and rests on a concrete foundation. The exterior is clad in horizontal wood siding. The
roof is cross-gabled and clad in asphalt shingles. A shed roof extends over the front porch and an addition to the rear (east)
elevation has a shed roof. A brick chimney is visible near the center of the roof and a skylight is on the south-facing roof slope.
The west-facing façade has an open wood porch at the south end; square wood posts with simple triangular brackets support the
shed-style roof. The primary entry is a modern vinyl and glass door. To the north is a six-over-six lite vinyl window and a single-lite
fixed picture window, both with simple wood surrounds. Above, in the gable peak, is a one-over-one lite vinyl window with a simple
wood surround.
The north elevation supports a single-lite fixed window flanked by a single-lite casement window near the east end of the elevation.
The west elevation was not visible from the right-of-way.
The first story of the south elevation has a pair of one-over-one lite vinyl windows and a smaller one-over-one lite vinyl windows,
both with wood surrounds. Above, in the gable peak is a one-over-one lite vinyl window with a wood surround.
Feature 2 is a garage with an apartment above at the east end of the property. A single-story front-gabled garage was present
during the 1983 survey, it was demolished in 2015. The garage presently on site was constructed in 2015. It is 1½ stories, "L-shape"
in plan, rests on a concrete foundation, and is clad in horizontal wood siding with vertical corner boards. The roof is front gabled
with a gabled dormer on the south elevation and a shed dormer on the north elevation. The overhanging eaves are closed, and the

roof is clad in asphalt shingles. The facade faces east toward the alley and supports a metal double-stall overhead door and a
paneled vinyl personnel entrance with inset lite. In the gable peak is a pair of vinyl casement windows with simple wood surrounds.
The north elevation has two, single-lite vinyl windows on the first floor. The second story has a pair of single-lite vinyl casement
windows and a single-lite awning window. The west elevation was not visible from the public right-of-way. The south elevation has
three, single-lite vinyl windows set in simple wood surrounds. The second story has a set of three single-lite vinyl windows in the
gabled dormer.
Feature 3 is a modern shed located between the garage and the residence. The feature is not visible from the public right-of-way.
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
(compiled by Crystal Alegria, The Extreme History Project, Bozeman, MT)
The property currently addressed as 606 North Black is located in the Imes Addition, platted on August 21, 1890, by Louis F. Menage
and Amanda Menage. The site is associated with European immigrants and Bozeman’s historic African American community.
Jonas Henderson purchased this property on January 15, 1898. He arrived in Bozeman with his wife and two children in 1883 on the
first passenger train to come over the Bozeman Hill. Upon arriving in Bozeman, he worked as a carpenter, most likely building the
house on this property. He later went into the sawmill business in Bridger Canyon, and then retail lumber, hardware, and farm
implements (The Independent-Record, 13 December 1934).
Jonas Henderson sold this property to Paula White on September 22, 1910. Paula Kuinders White was born in the Netherlands on
June 13, 1878 (Findagrave.com, 2012). Paula married Sherman White on December 15, 1900, in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com,
2016). Sherman White was born in June of 1866 in Montana Territory. Paula and Sherman lived in this residence prior to owning the
property. They are listed in the City Directory as living in this residence with their son, Lawrence from approximately 1908 to 1912.
In 1908, Sherman is listed in the City Directory as a ranchman, and in 1910 and 1912 as an RFD No 4. Carrier (R. L. Polk & Company,
1908, 1910, 1912). Around 1912, the family moved to Seattle, WA, where they resided until their deaths (findagrave.com, 2012).
Paula White sold the house to William Monroe on August 24, 1922. William Monroe lived in this residence during ownership. He
worked as a blacksmith (R. L. Polk & Co., 1929).
Fred and Julia Rogers lived in this residence from c. 1916 to 1917. Fred Rogers was born in Bozeman, MT on November 25, 1887, to
Eli and Emma Barnes Rogers. Fred Rogers grew up on Black Avenue, just a block south of this residence, and was a member of
Bozeman’s black community. On February 20, 1913, Fred Rogers married Julia "Jewell" Watterson. Julia had been born in Knoxville,
TN to Fannie and Dan Watterson. Julia was also of African American descent (Ancestry.com, 2017). After living at this residence, the
couple moved to 541 North Bozeman. Fred Rogers’ life came to a violent end in November of 1919 when he was shot in the chest
and died. He is buried in Bozeman’s Sunset Hills Cemetery in the Rogers family plot (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 12 November 1919).
A year after Fred’s murder, Julia Rogers married Columbus D. Joseph on March 23, 1920. They lived at 264 Montana Avenue in
Bozeman, MT in 1920. Julia did housework for private families (Ancestry.com, 2010, 2016).
The descendants of William Monroe sold this property to William Henry Davis on August 16, 1937. Lillian "Lillie" Chisholm Davis was
born in Decatur, Illinois in 1869. She moved to Belgrade, MT in 1895. Lillian taught school in Dry Creek and Valley View. She married
Samuel Miller on July 19, 1899, in Helena, MT. They lived on a ranch outside of Belgrade (The Madisonian, 24 March 1933). Samuel
Miller was born in Virginia City, MT on October 8, 1871. He grew up there, later moving to a ranch outside of Belgrade, MT. After
the death of Samuel Miller in 1933, Lillian married William Henry Davis (Great Falls Tribune, 07 June 1951). She transferred
ownership of this property to him on June 28, 1938. Lillie and William Henry Davis lived in this house after their marriage in 1933
until their deaths in 1951 (R.L. Polk & Co., 1935, 1940, 1950). Both died in 1951, and the property transferred to husband and wife,
William Valentine Davis and Blanche I. Davis on June 29, 1951. William Valentine or "Tine" was the son of William Henry Davis and
his first wife, Rebecca Davis. William was born in Belgrade, MT on September 30, 1902. He married Blanche Stevens in Bozeman on
December 25, 1926. They moved around early in their marriage, living in Great Falls, Kalispell, Columbia Falls, and Martinsdale. They
moved back to Bozeman in 1951, taking ownership of this residence.
The property changed hands several times in the 1970s through the 1990s. Blanche I. Davis sold the property to Loren W. (son of

Susan J. Vandervos on February 28, 1975, who sold it to Charles M and Ann D Peabody on March 24, 1975. The Peabodys sold the
property to Edward Forbes and Mary Louise Peters on September 10, 1975. Forbes and Peters sold the property to William R.
McCleary and Thomas G. McCleary on January 10, 1977. William R. McCleary, Janet M. McCleary, and Thomas G. McCleary sold the
property to Michael D. Steele on June 8, 1978. Ralph W. Steele and Michael D. Steele sold it to Volney Steele on August 16, 1980.
The Steele family owned the property until they sold it to Keevin L and Libby W Stanhope on February 11, 1991. The Stanhopes sold
the property to Meridith L McKenney (Meridith McKenney Knight) on June 16, 1995, and she is the current owner in August of 2022.
