Peretti - Zone Text Amendment Fraternities and SororitiesFrom:jodi.peretti@gmail.com To:Agenda Subject:Zone Text Amendment Fraternities and Sororities Date:Monday, January 23, 2023 2:00:27 PM CAUTION: This email originated from outside of the organization. Do not click links or open attachments unless you recognize the sender and know the content is safe. My name is Jodi Peretti and I am the House Corporation President of the Sigma Beta Chapter of the Chi Omega women’s fraternity. Our home is located at 405 W. Garfield. I am contacting you regarding the request to reinstate fraternity and sorority houses into the “Authorized Use in Zoning Districts” table and only allow chapter houses to be permitted in R-O, R-5 and conditionally in R-3 zoning. I oppose this change for the following reasons: 1. Many of the Greek houses in the University neighborhood have existed in their current location or in the neighborhood for over 100 years. The homeowners in this neighborhood made the choice to purchase a home in the University neighborhood with existing sororities and fraternities. They knew the risks when they purchased their homes. 2. Chapter houses offer affordable, guaranteed housing for students. Limiting the ability of fraternities and sororities to organize chapter houses will decrease affordable housing available to students. 3. Chapter houses reduce traffic congestion near the University because all houses are within walking or biking distance to campus. 4. Why punish the entire Greek Community for a problem caused by one organization? It seems more reasonable to address the problem. 5. How can you disallow one type of student organization to be located near campus, but allow other forms of group housing? Sincerely, Jodi Peretti Sigma Beta Chapter of Chi Omega House Corporation President
