I see that a new large ADU has just gone in above a new garage at 910 S 6th Avenue. It lookslarge enough to house four unrelated persons, and it appears unlikely that there will be
sufficient parking for four additional cars. I’m expressing my concern because the last alley-accessed ADU on our block put additional cars on Harrison Street, which was already
crowded with renters’ cars.
Permitting ADUs that hover over existing yards and provide insufficient parking strikes me asa rather disrespectful and somewhat irrational solution to the city’s housing problem. This
anything goes approach to solving the housing crisis is eroding quality of life for many of usand is likely to drive long-term residents out of Bozeman. We’ve called 509 W Harrison home
for 42 years, but we’re considering moving, as we expect that we’ll eventually be surroundedby Brobdingnagian ADUs that erase our privacy, block the light, and eliminate parking for
visitors to our home.
Lest I hear that my NIMBY concerns are selfish, let me admit the same. When it comes tohouse and home, we are all driven by selfish motives. That includes those who build ADUs, a
growing University population that is gobbling up housing space, and all who seek a place tolive. My concern is that the selfish motives of those of us who have made our homes here for
decades are the last to be considered when solutions are sought. I seek to change that. Pleaseshare this with the Commission.
