The building is a wood-framed, single-story commercial building. It has a rectangular plan shape, with a concrete foundation. The side-gabled roof is covered in asphalt shingles and the exterior is clad in vertical particle board siding painted bright green. The entrances on the north and south elevations are beneath gable-fronted bays, which are partially enclosed with horizontal wood slat siding, unfinished. The south entry is at-grade. The north entry is accessed by a flight of three steps and/or an ADA-accessible ramp that runs parallel to the building, spanning the west half of the elevation. The ramp has a wood-slat railing that matches the entryway treatment. It is situated on the southeast corner of the lot, with street access from the south and a parking lot to the north. A variety of window types are present, all of which are modern metal sash. There are two-over-two-lite windows on the north and east elevations and banks of large fixed windows with fiberglass panels below on the south façade. The west gable end faces an alleyway, but was obscured by mature vegetation and a fenced side yard along the south and west sides of the building. The property was originally a commercial warehouse. Based on photos taken prior to the 2008 remodel, it had no particular stylistic embellishments. It was sided in vertical particle board, with an asphalt shingle roof, small, rectangular fixed windows and a gabled north entry. The design work for the 2008 remodel was done by Intrinsik Architecture of Bozeman, with contractor Rich Baerg Construction. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 601 W VILLARD ST Site Number: 126 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property is in excellent condition and has experienced several modifications over time. The City’s property records indicate that the building was originally constructed in 1957. Asphalt was installed in 1977, presumably to create the parking lot to the north of the building. In 2008, the building was extensively remodeled by Intrinsik Architecture of Bozeman, with contractor Rich Baerg Construction. A cursory search through city directories from the time of original construction offered no relevant information regarding past uses of this building. Current survey data are insufficient to determine potential historic associations; however, changes to the property over time have compromised integrity such that it no longer conveys historic character. Due to extensive exterior and interior alterations, it is found to lack integrity sufficient to convey historic character in reference to associations with events that have made significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history under Criterion A, historically significant persons under Criterion B, characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction under Criterion C, and it is unlikely to yield important information in reference to research questions under Criterion D. Metcalf recommends this site not eligible for inclusion in the NRHP. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Integrity Property Name: 601 W VILLARD ST Site Number: 126 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site is in excellent condition, however, extensive remodeling of the interior and exterior of the property in 2008 has compromised all aspects of integrity. The site no longer conveys a sense of historic character.
