MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 515 W VILLARD ST Site Number: 125 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Minimal Traditional Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This property consists on one historical architectural feature: a house built c. 1960. The house is a wood-framed, single-story structure with characteristics of the Minimal Traditional style typical of mid-century housing developments. It has a rectangular plan, with a concrete foundation. The house has a hipped truncated roof clad in asphalt shingles, and has overhanging eves. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding. The primary façade faces south, onto W Villard St. The main entry is flush with the exterior walls and is off centered on the west end of the primary façade, and is accessed by concrete steps which are boarded by metal railing on either side. Most of the original windows have been replaced, but the openings are intact with some sporting the original wood frame and others a newer metal frame. Vegetation surrounding the property includes a deciduous tree to the south of the front façade, a coniferous bush off the south-west corner of the house, other small deciduous bushes around the front yard, and a large mature deciduous tree in the side yard to the east of the house. The property was first recorded in August, 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” The site is in good condition overall, and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 515 W VILLARD ST Site Number: 125 HISTORY OF PROPERTY The property was originally purchased and owned by William Beall. It was platted as The Violett Addition by Lena E. Border, Harvey E. Murdock, and Ina I. Murdock on May 12, 1941. Lena Border was born September 6, 1873 to Sam and Mary Bostwick near Springhill, Montana. On August 12, 1883 Lena married Henry Border and they lived on a farm outside of Bozeman for ten years and then moved into Bozeman where they lived until Henry’s death in 1929. After the death of her husband, Lena lived with her daughter, Dr. Leila Fishleigh, in Portland Oregon. Lena Border was a member of the Bozeman Rebekah Lodge (Bozeman Daily Chronicle, 1941). Lena died in August 1941 and was buried next to Henry in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com, 2004). Harvey Murdock was born in Ohio, and Ina (Brown) Murdock was born in South Dakota. The couple were married in 1907 and came to Montana in 1914. Harvey taught at Montana State College (MSC), which later became Montana State University, from 1914 until he retired in 1943. Harvey died in July 1956 (The Billings Gazette, 18 July 1956) and Ina died in 1972. They were buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). Emil Martel purchased this property on March 19, 1960 and built a residential property that he quickly sold to Peter and Jennie Lindemulder. Emil Martel had been born in Friedenstal, Ukraine, a son of Johann and Karoline Junker Martel. Emil grew up in Ukraine, marrying Adeline Losing in 1934. During WWII they were evacuated to Germany and remained there until 1951 when they immigrated to the United States. They settled first in Baker, MT and then moved to Bozeman in 1956. Adeline had been born on April 20, 1915 in Makarowa, Ukraine to Jakob and Lydia Singer Losing. Adeline and Emil were married on December 13, 1934 in Birsula, Ukraine. Emil died in 1988 and Adeline died in 2004. They were buried together at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (William Martel, personal communication, 2019). On March 1, 1960 Emil and his son, William, formed Martel Construction. The first houses Martel Construction built were on North 6th Street in Bozeman (William Martel, personal communication, 2019) and this residence on West Villard Street. The first occupants of this house built by Martel Construction were Peter and Jennie Lindemulder. Peter Lindemulder had been born on April 12, 1885 in Gronigan, Netherlands. He died on July 23, 1964 (Ancestry.com, 2017). He had lived in Bozeman for 14 years and had been a farmer prior to living in town. Jennie had been born in Gronigan, Netherlands on July 20, 1890. Jennie died May 8, 1981 in Wyoming, Michigan. Jennie and Peter were buried together in Churchill Cemetery in Churchill, MT (Findagrave.com, 2004). Fred and Irene Leistiko purchased the property July 29, 1968. Fred had been born on January 2, 1902 in Glasgow, MT to Fred and Augusta (Bleich) Leistiko. Fred began a telephone career in 1924 as a time-keeper and was later a “combination” man. He was manager for the Mountain Sates Telephone and Telegraph Company for over forty years. He was a life-long member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Fred and Irene Wagner were married on September 7, 1938 in Spokane, Washington (The Billings Gazette, 12 March 1976). In retirement, Fred and Irene moved to Bozeman in 1968 (The Great Falls Tribune, 12 March 1976). Fred died on March 10, 1976 in Bozeman at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital (Ancestry.com, 2017). Irene had been born on August 29, 1909 to Rosa and Henry Wagner in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She went to school in Philadelphia, Conrad, and Great Falls, MT. She attended Great Falls Commercial College. She was employed by Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company for twenty-six years. She also belonged to the Telephone Pioneers of America (Montana Standard, 12 May 1998). Irene died on May 8, 1998. Fred and Irene were buried in Sunset Memorial Park in Belgrade, MT (Findagrave.com, 2004). Janet L. Hadnagy purchased the property on June 29, 2000 from the estate of Fred and Irene Leistiko. Hadnagy sold the property to Crystal M. Richmond on July 13, 2000. Erik D. Eck purchased the property from Crystal M. Skinner (fka Crystal M. Richmond) and Timothy S. Skinner on June 15, 2005. Eck is the current owner in October of 2019. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 4 History of Property Property Name: 515 W VILLARD ST Site Number: 125 Table 1. Chain of Title, 515 W. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 6 Statement of Significance Property Name: 515 W VILLARD ST Site Number: 125 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE This property consists of one historical architectural feature: a house built in c. 1960. The property was first recorded in August, 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, it was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” The site is in good condition overall, and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP of State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey association with the Postwar Expansion Phase of Bozeman’s development (RTI 2008). It is representative of the Minimal Traditional housing that occurred throughout central Bozeman. Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s 1941 Violett Addition to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 515 W VILLARD ST Site Number: 125 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in good condition, overall. The windows have been altered; newer metal frames affect integrity of materials, and the fiberglass awning on east of the house affects integrity of design. There is one visibly broken window, and some peeling paint along rain gutter rail. However, other aspects remain intact and the site is able to convey its historic character.
