The house is a wood-framed Queen Anne-style “cottage.” It has a rectangular plan with a concrete foundation. The roof is hipped and covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are covered in asbestos shingle. The primary façade faces south onto W Mendenhall St. The façade is asymmetrical, with the entry on the east end of the façade and a prominent gabled dormer at the west end. The entry is a standard door accessed by a flight of concrete steps. The gabled dormer contains a louvered vent. Beneath the dormer, on the first story of the south façade is a single fixed picture window. No other fenestration is present. The east elevation of the house has a similar gabled dormer in the hipped-roof. It contains a louvered vent. On the first story, there is a secondary entry at the north end. It is accessed by a concrete stoop that has steps leading up from the south and the north. The doorway is sheltered by a bracketed gabled awning, which is clad in asphalt shingles. To the north of the doorway is a one-over-one- lite sash window. To the south of the doorway is a large fixed window with divided lites. The west elevation of the house contains a two-lite sliding window at the south end and two one-over-one-lite sash windows. The north (rear) elevation was not visible from the public ROW. The second feature, a single-stall garage, is located to the north of the house. The garage is a single-story, wood-framed structure with a gable-front roof. According to property records, it was added to the lot in 1945. It is clad in vinyl siding, roughly the same pale yellow color as the asbestos siding of the house. The rafter tails are exposed along the east and west sides of the roof. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles. The primary entry to the garage is a wood paneled sectional door on the north elevation, facing an east-west-trending alley. The garage door contains two square, fixed lites. No other fenestration is present. The property has a chain-link fence along the west boundary, in the front yard. The yard is well-kept with several small deciduous shrubs planted against the house. Mature deciduous trees are present in the rear yard. Several changes to the property have been made over time. Historic maps indicate that the house originally had a recessed entry and that sometime after 1943, the entryway was enclosed. Original windows have been replaced with modern window sash and several openings have been altered to accommodate sliding and fixed window lites. This property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, it was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” The site is in good condition and retains some aspects of integrity—sufficient to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 605 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: 109 HISTORY OF PROPERTY William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted the land as Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883. This residence was constructed between 1911 and 1912, based on Sanborn maps and Gallatin County deed records. Charles and Lucille Callaghan purchased this property on May 30, 1893, before the house was built. Charles Callaghan was born in Joliet, Illinois on April 22, 1850. Callaghan first came to Silver Star, Montana Territory and engaged in mining and operating a hotel. His mining efforts had little success so he left Montana for Nevada, Indiana, and then Kansas. In the spring of 1880, he returned to Montana Territory via the Missouri River, landing in Fort Benton and traveling to Three Forks, which was at that time known as Bridgeville. He drove a stagecoach between Bozeman and Helena in 1881 and 1882 and then worked in railroad and highway contracting. On May 1, 1883 Charles married Lucille B. Monroe in Three Forks (Ancestry.com 2017). Lucille Monroe was born November 12, 1860 in Pennsylvania (Ancestry.com 2001). When she was still a small child the family moved to Kansas. When Lucille was 23 years old, she came to Montana to accept a job in Willow Creek, MT teaching school. Charles was ranching near Willow Creek at this time; the two met and were married in 1883 (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 16 January 1934). She lived in Gallatin County since c. 1884 and in Bozeman since c. 1899 (The Independent-Record 16 January 1934). In 1895, the family moved to a farm north of Bozeman. In 1910, Charles retired from the farm and moved into Bozeman, MT, and became County Commissioner of Gallatin County, a position he held for six years (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 17 July 1932; The Independent-Record 20 July 1932). Charles died in 1932 and Lucille died two years later in January of 1934, after a lingering illness (Findagrave.com 2004). She became seriously ill when she dislocated a shoulder while dressing. They are buried next to one another in the family plot in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). This family was only briefly associated with this property and not at all with the extant features recorded. In 1909, the Leach family acquired the property. They had only a brief association with it themselves, and also before construction of the residence here. Adeline and A. N. Payseno purchased the property on March 21, 1911 and are the first owners/occupants of the house built at 605 W. Mendenhall. Adeline E. Tibeau was born on May 16, 1887 to Susana Nugent and Alexandre Tibeau (Findagrave.com 2004). Alcie Nelson “Al” Payseno was born in 1880 in Canada. A. N. Payseno was a traveling salesman in 1910 while living on West Mendenhall Street (R. L. Polk & Co 1910). A. N. Payseno died November 4, 1954 in Monticello, Wright County, Minnesota (Findagrave.com 2004). Adeline died March 25, 1928 in Canada and is buried in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, Canada (Findagrave.com 2004). Fred and Miream J. Nelson purchased the property on October 12, 1922. Fred was born in Montana in 1890. He worked as a warehouse man for a wholesale grocery in 1940 while living at 605 West Mendenhall Street (Ancestry.com 2012). Miream “Tirzah” Nelson was born July 15, 1983 in Montana (Findagrave.com 2004). The family moved to Salem, Oregon c. 1946, where Fred worked at the Oregon Fairview Home and Training Center as a florist (The Capital Journal 19 Feb 1966). Fred died in February of 1966 and Tirzah died on January 25, 1983. They are buried in the Belcrest Memorial Park in Salem, OR (Findagrave.com 2004). Laurence S. and Emma L. Knapp purchased the property on September 2, 1949. Laurence Knapp was born in Wisconsin. He came to Wilsall, MT in 1915 and owned a garage and shop until 1931 when he moved to Bozeman, MT. In Bozeman, Laurence owned and operated Knapp Motors until his retirement in 1962. Laurence married Emma (Stallman) Speaker in Ashton, Idaho in 1935 (Gallatin County Tribune 1969). Emma was born in Rocky Springs, Wyoming to William H. and Anna Ruhl Stallman. Her family moved to Whitehall, MT when she was young, and then to Livingston, MT where she attended school, graduating from Park High School. She worked as a bookkeeper after high school. During the First World War she worked in Portland, OR at the shipyards. Her first marriage was to Earl Speaker. After his death she married Laurence Knapp (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 6 May 1987). Emma died in 1987 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Livingston, MT. Laurence Knapp died in 1969 and is buried with Emma at Mountain View Cemetery in Livingston, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). A. R. and Caroline C. Schunke assumed ownership of the property January 15, 1963. Caroline was the sister of Emma Knapp who owned this property previously. Caroline was married to Adolph Richard Schunke on March 30, 1912 in Livingston, MT (Ancestry.com 2016). Adolph Schunke was born on April 11, 1886 in Baden, Landkreis Verden, Lower Saxony, Germany to Gustav and Florentine (Kumke) Schunke. He came to the United States on The Sorrento ship with his family on April 25, 1888 when he was only nine months old. They arrived in New York and the family made their way to Livingston and settled there about 1907 (The Butte Miner 13 November 1923). Adolph grew up in Livingston. As an adult, he worked for the Northern Pacific Railway Company. The two lived much of their lives in Livingston, MT but eventually Caroline moved to Polson, MT to be closer to her daughter (The Missoulian 21 Oct 1978). They are buried together in Mountain View Cemetery in Livingston, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Neither appears to have resided at 605 W Mendenhall St. Robert R. and Justine Schunke, son and daughter-in-law to Caroline and Adolph Schunke were the subsequent owners. Justine Elizabeth Burchett was born September 13, 1919 in Livingston, MT to Hilrey and Esther Burchett. She attended school in Livingston and graduated from Park High School in 1937. Justine worked for Bell Telephone Systems, Artcraft Printers, and at the Emerson School Library (Bozeman Daily Chronicle 13 Jan 2016). Justine married Robert Schunke on July 11, 1944 in Livingston, MT. Robert R. Schunke was born on December 29, 1914 in Livingston, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Robert worked as a mechanic in Bozeman, MT (R. L. Polk & Co, 1954). Justine died on January 9, 2016 and is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com 2001). McDonald Architects. At that time, it was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Character-defining elements of its modest Queen Anne “cottage” design are present, despite alterations to materials, and include its asymmetrical façade, pyramidal massing, and gabled dormers. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 2nd Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 9 Integrity Property Name: 605 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: 109 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) The site is in good condition overall and retains some aspects of integrity. Changes to original windows, enclosing the original entry, and application of asbestos siding have affected integrity of materials, design, workmanship and, to some extent, feeling. Integrity of setting has been affected somewhat by the loss of contemporaneous structures in the vicinity, including to the south across W Mendenhall St. and the encroachment of commercial development. However, cumulatively, the site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character in reference to its style and period of construction within early residential settlement of what is now central Bozeman.
