MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 2 Architectural Description Property Name: 317 W MENDENHALL ST Site Number: 091 ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION Architectural Style: Other (specify) If Other, specify: Eclectic Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown Source of Information: N/A This site consists of two historic architectural features: a single-story, wood-framed residence, built c. 1889 and a small, single-stall garage added to the northwest corner of the property later. The residence is a small Queen Anne style house that has experienced considerable remodeling. The house has an asymmetrical form with an L-shaped footprint and concrete foundation. The roof is gabled and clad in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in asbestos shingles. The primary façade faces south on the W Mendenhall St. The façade consists of a projecting gable end on the west end, and a shed-roofed porch to the east, along the side-gabled wing. The projecting gable end has a large picture window at center. The window is a modern metal window with side casements. The window is sheltered beneath a shed-roofed awning. The awning is wood and clad in rusted corrugated metal sheeting. The finish surrounding the window is wood, with industrial metal ornament. The primary entry to the house is located within the porch. It is a standard side-hung door storm door accessed by two concrete steps. To the west of the door is a six-lite fixed window. An identical window is to the east of the door, and a bank of similar fixed nine-lite windows spans the remainder of the enclosed porch, continuing around the building’s southeast corner onto the south end of the east elevation. At the north end of the east elevation are a pair of one-over-one-lite double-hung wood windows. A basement lite is also present on this elevation, within the concrete foundation. The west elevation has two one-over-one-lite double-hung windows. The windows have aluminum storms affixed. At the north end of the elevation, there is a slightly recessed wall that also contains a one-over-one-lite window. The windows and openings on the east and west elevations appear to be original, with the exception of the aluminum storm windows. The windows on the south façade are modern replacements, and the original openings were likely modified in conjunction with recent remodeling. The house’s north elevation was not able to be seen from the public ROW. However, a wood-framed, gable-roofed single-stall garage is present to the northwest of the house. It is accessed by an alley that runs past the rear property boundary. The garage has a front- gabled roof clad in asphalt shingles; the exterior walls are made of vertical-board covered with brick-patterned asphalt sheeting. There is a vertical-board door on the east gable end, which is mounted on an overhead track. No other openings were observed. The garage is in poor condition. Its walls are buckling and the door is no longer operable. This property has been remodeled since its original construction. At some point, likely in the early mid-century, asbestos shingle siding was placed over what was probably clapboard siding. The original gable-end window was altered, as well, in the fashion of mid-century picture windows with fixed side lites. The front porch was enclosed. More recently, the south wall of the enclosed porch was expanded further south and modern windows were installed. The modern windows are not sympathetic to the original styling or character of the building. The treatment around the windows on the south façade is modern and in an industrial-inspired aesthetic. The awning over the picture window is similarly of a contemporary industrial style, detracting from the site’s integrity of materials, design, workmanship, and feeling. The site was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the site was considered “an intrusive element within a potential historic district.” This recommendation was made on the basis of extensive remodeling and loss of integrity. Since that time, further modifications have affected integrity of materials, design, workmanship, and feeling. Metcalf finds the property no longer retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted it as Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883. William H. Tracy originally sold lots 7, 8, and 9 separately (see Tables 1a and 1b). By 1889, Fred H. Harris had acquired all three lots and they were thereafter conveyed together (see Table 1c). The residence on this property was built in c. 1889 (Sanborn Map Company, Jan 1889, Jul 1890). Fred Harrison Harris was born May 18, 1857 in Ottawa, Canada (GHM Vertical File). Fred came to the United States in 1862 and married Marie “Mary” Colosky December 12, 1877 in Elizabeth, Minnesota. Mary Colosky had been born on June 9, 1855 in Guelph, Ontario Canada. In c. 1882 Fred and Mary moved to Montana. In 1900 the census reports that Fred worked in upholstering and carpet cleaning (Ancestry.com, 2004). Fred and Mary moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1900 (R.L. Polk & Co, 1902). Mary Harris died on March 29, 1949 in Tigard, Oregon. Lyman Walton purchased the property on February 6, 1905. Lyman Walton had been born February 9, 1858 in Iowa to Silas and Elizabeth (Freeman) Walton. While living at this property he worked as a farmer. In 1908, his daughter Mae worked as a retoucher for Schlecten Bros. photography. The 1910 census lists Lyman and Fanny Walton living in the house on the property along with their daughter Mae. Five people lived with them as lodgers. Lyman Walton had married Fanny Moody on April 24, 1880 in Indiana. Fanny died in 1943 and was buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). Lyman Walton died on October 1, 1954 in Bozeman. He was buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Ancestry.com, 2017). John T. and Genevria Lux purchased the property on February 6, 1919. John Thomas Lux had been born on February 11, 1849 in Jefferson City, Indiana (Ancestry.com, 2001). John married Genevria “Geneva” Hughes on March 26, 1902 in Bozeman (Ancestry.com, 2016). Geneva had been born on April 30, 1864 in Monroe County, Missouri. John died on June 11, 1942 in Thompson Falls, MT. Geneva died on September 4, 1944 at the Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs, MT (Ancestry.com, 2001). Earl G. Smiley purchased the property on August 2, 1926. Earl G. Smiley had been born on May 2, 1894. On December 20, 1919, Earl married Jessie in Casey County, KY. Jessie May Smiley had been born on March 12, 1904 in Casey County, Kentucky to Clell and Nancy Cochran Randolph. She attended primary and secondary schools in Kentucky. Earl and Jessie moved to Gallatin County in 1921. Earl died on March 1, 1964 and was buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). Jessie died in September of 1979 (GHM Vertical File) and was buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman (Findagrave.com, 2004). The property was owned by various people after the Smileys and is currently, as of November 2019, owned by Daniel H. and Julie Ann Hitchcock. Table 1a. The house was constructed in 1889. Metcalf concurs with the previous recommendation and finds the property no longer retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and is found to lack individual significance under Criteria A, B, C, and D, and to lack integrity sufficient to convey its historic character. The site is not located within an existing historic district and in consideration of similar properties in the vicinity, Metcalf finds it no longer retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character. Metcalf recommends that it be considered not eligible/non-contributing.
