The house is a strong example of the Queen Anne style, retaining several character-defining features. It is a wood-framed structure, with a rectangular plan shape and field stone foundation with concrete plastered over the exposed sections. The roof is irregular with both hipped and cross-gabled features. The roof is clad in asphalt shingles, and has a central chimney protruding from the middle of the hipped roof section. Scalloped vergeboard decorates the gable eaves. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood drop siding, which has a flare or “kick” at the plate level between the first and second stories. The primary façade faces north, onto W Lamme St., and is asymmetrical. The primary door is located on the east end of the north façade, and within a recessed porch with turned posts and spindlework designs. The main entryway is accessed by wood steps leading up to the wood deck of the front porch. Directly above the front porch is a second story balcony with the same woodwork and designs. The primary door and picture window, with a leaded glass transom, are original. Most of the other windows have been replaced with modern vinyl sash, but the openings are intact and consist of double-hung windows around the first and second stories and small fixed windows within the gables. To the south of the house is a detached garage built in 1992. It is a large 1.5- story wood-framed structure with a side-gabled roof clad in asphalt shingles. The exterior walls are clad in horizontal wood siding, painted the same mint green as the house. The south elevation has a double-hung window placed in the gable, and two fixed windows, one the west end and one on the east end of the floor level. The primary west facing façade contains two single-stall vehicle openings with the main entry on the far north end of the façade. The site is well-maintained, with some clutter in the back yard, as seen from the alleyway. Vegetation in the front yard includes a large mature deciduous tree in the northeast corner of the front lawn, a large mature deciduous tree on the west side of the west elevation, and deciduous bushes along the eastern border of the property. The vegetation in the backyard includes a large mature coniferous tree between the house and the detached garage, as well as scattered deciduous bushes. The site was first recorded in August, 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. This site is in good condition overall and retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. In comparison to houses of similar age and style in the immediate vicinity, this particular property is a good representative example of its type. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 606 W LAMME ST Site Number: 063 HISTORY OF PROPERTY William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872. He platted it as Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883, prior to construction of the house here. The house on the property was built in 1908 by early Bozeman architect John Bartholomew (Sanborn Map Company Jan 1904). John and his brother Elmer are well-known area builders who constructed numerous residences throughout central Bozeman in the early 20th century, especially known for their bungalow designs in the Cooper Park neighborhood. Charles and Lucille B. Callaghan purchased the property on July 19, 1900. Lucille Bridget (Monroe) Callaghan was born on November 12, 1860 in Pennsylvania (Ancestry.com 2001). Lucille married Charles Callaghan on May 1, 1883 in Gallatin County, MT (Ancestry.com 2017). Charles Callaghan was born in Joliet, Illinois on April 22, 1850. In his youth he headed west, working for a few years in the construction department of the Union Pacific Railway at Omaha, Nebraska. In 1870, he made his way to Utah where he stayed for two or three years. After living in Utah, he came to Montana to mine in Silver Star, MT for a time. After the mines played out, he returned to the Midwest, yet in 1880 came back to Montana via the Missouri River. He lived in Three Forks, MT for many years. He drove the stage between Three Forks and Helena for two years and then worked in railroad and highway contracting. In 1895, he decided to farm in the Gallatin valley. In 1910, he retired from the farm and moved into Bozeman, MT (The Independent- Record 20 July 1932). Charles Callaghan died in 1932. In 1934, Lucille died after a lingering illness (Findagrave.com 2004). Charles and Lucille are both buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Martin Harris purchased the property on February 19, 1901. Martin Harris was born in Missouri c.1843. Harris was a freighter and it was recorded in his obituary that, “...he came to Bozeman one winter with a load of goods when the thermometer was 40 degrees below zero. He camped on the outskirts of town and slept that night under the wagon on his bed, which he carried” (The Great Falls Tribune 2 February 1906). Harris died of cancer of the stomach in Bozeman, MT on September 20, 1904 (The Butte Miner 23 September 1904). Neither the Callaghans nor Martin Harris were directly associated with the house at 606 W. Lamme Street. John A. and Ruth M. Bartholomew purchased this property on October 19, 1907. John Bartholomew was born in 1874 to John and Katherine (Gruenewald) Bartholomew. John Bartholomew was a builder in Bozeman; he built the residence on this property in 1908 (James McDonald 1984). John married Ruth Daggett on April 23, 1905 in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com 2016). Ruth Daggett was born September 16, 1877 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Charles and Bassett Daggett. Ruth died on August 5, 1931 and John died in 1961. They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Emma M. Alleger purchased the property on March 6, 1923. Emma Alleger Kelder was born on May 13, 1888 in Lenn County, Missouri. Emma Alleger married Henry Kelder on March 21, 1935 in Livingston, MT (Ancestry.com 2017). Emma Kelder died on December 18, 1942 in Bozeman, MT. She is buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery (Ancestry.com 2017). John R. Cloninger purchased the property on October 3, 1941. John Raymond Cloninger was born on May 30, 1910 in Fredericktown, Missouri to Daniel Benjamin and Mary (Hails) Cloninger. John served in the Army from April 18, 1944 to December 20, 1944. He was a truck driver and salesman for the Bon Ton Bakery in Bozeman, MT (R. L. Polk & Co 1954). Verna Richardson was born October 2, 1913 in Lenore, Wyoming to James and Maryha Richardson. John and Verna were married on October 9, 1933 in Livingston, MT (Ancestry.com 2017). Verna worked as a waiter in the Bozeman Hotel in Bozeman (R. L. Polk & Co 1954). John died on October 27, 1981 of cardiac arrest, after which he was buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. The current property owners, as of January 2020, are Edward D. and Iris E. Driscoll, Trustees of Edward and Iris Driscoll Living Trust. Table 1. Chain of Title, 606 West Lamme Street, Bozeman, Montana. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Statement of Significance Property Name: 606 W LAMME ST Site Number: 063 NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES NRHP Listing Date: NRHP Eligibility: Yes No Individually Contributing to Historic District Noncontributing to Historic District NRHP Criteria: A B C D Area of Significance: Period of Significance: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. Very few changes appear to have been made to the property since it was first recorded. The original wood windows have been replaced with vinyl sash, affecting integrity of materials to some extent. However, the original openings remain intact. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 3rd Addition in order to evaluate district potential.
