ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify:
Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family dwelling
Architect: unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: unknown
Builder/Contractor: unknown Company/City/State: unknow
Source of Information: N/A
This property consists of two historical architectural features: a house built c. 1892 and a detached garage built in 1954. The house is a
wood-framed, 1.5-story structure with characteristics of the Queen Anne style including its asymmetrical form and cross-gabled roof.
It has an irregular plan shape, with a foundation that is likely concrete but was not visible from the public ROW at the time of
inventory. The exterior is clad in asbestos shingles and the cross-gabled roof is covered in asphalt shingles. The primary entry is
located in a flat-roofed enclosed porch on the east end of the south façade, recessed slightly from the gable-front façade and accessed
by a paved path parallel to the driveway.
The south façade consists of a gable-front with paired one-over-one-lite windows on the first story and a single one-over-one-lite
window centered in the upper half story. The transecting wing is set back and contains no fenestration on the south side. The entry, at
the east end of the south façade, consists of a modern standard side-hung door with a single fixed lite. Directly above the entry, the
roof of the enclosed porch has a balustrade and serves as a balcony in the reentrant corner of the transacting gabled wings.
The east elevation contains a bank of three one-over-one-lite windows in the enclosed porch and a pair of one-over-one-lite windows
in the first story of the gable end at the north end, overlooking the driveway. In the upper half story, there is a single one-over-one-lite
window in the apex of the gable. A mature deciduous tree in the front yard obscured views of the balcony over the main entry, though
it is presumed there is an opening at the south end of the upper half story that provides access to this flat roof.
The west elevation also consists of a gable ended wing. There is one one-over-one-lite window centered on the gable on the first story.
In the upper half story, there is a one-over-one-lite window centered in the gable, with a smaller window opening immediately north.
No other fenestration was observed on this elevation, due to vegetation obscuring views from the public ROW.
The rear (north) elevation was not able to be observed from the public ROW.
A second feature, a 1954 garage, was added to the rear of the property and stands immediately northeast of the house. It is accessed by
a paved driveway that extends north, along the east side of the house. The garage is wood-framed, with a side-gabled roof. The roof is
covered in asphalt shingles. The exterior r appears to be clad in synthetic material. Historically, this structure was a single-stall, but
appears to have been converted for use as a “mother-in-law” house. This living space has a divided-lite window on the east end of the
south façade, where a garage door would have been originally. There is also a large plate-glass window or door on the south elevation,
to the west, barely visible from the public ROW.
The property was first recorded in August, 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered an
“intrusive element within a potential historic district.” The site is in good condition overall, and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient
integrity to convey historic character.

History of Property
Property Name: 521 W LAMME ST Site Number: 060
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
Prior to construction of the house at 521 W Lamme St, this property was part of William H. Tracy’s extensive land holdings. He had
purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872 and included it in the plat of Tracy’s 3rd Addition on May 16, 1883.
William and Sarah Tracy sold these lots to Green B. Williams on August 14, 1891.
Green Berry Williams was born in Henderson County, North Carolina on April 27, 1842 (Findagrave.com 2004). Green Williams
married Ellen Edney on September 13, 1865 in Henderson, NC (Ancestry 2015). Green came to Bozeman soon after the Civil War, in
which he fought for the confederate cause (The Butte Daily Post 17 Oct 1905). Green worked as a carpenter and mechanic while
living in Bozeman (The Anaconda Standard 17 Oct 1905). Ellen Edney Williams was born on October 13, 1849 in North Carolina.
Ellen Williams died on February 15, 1907 in Portland, OR. Ellen and Green are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman,
MT.
John H. and Lena B. Martin purchased the property on June 9, 1900 and owned it briefly before selling it to Timothy Ward on August
8, 1901. Timothy C. Ward had been born in Maine on December 30, 1828 to Enoch and Martha (Carter) Ward. He came to Montana
in 1863, first to Bannack and then later to Alder Gulch near Virginia City, MT. He arrived in the Gallatin valley in 1866 and
purchased a large ranch near Bozeman in 1880. He lived on and worked the ranch until 1901, when he moved to Bozeman and
purchased this property. He lived at 521 West Lamme Street until his death on March 16, 1914. He died suddenly, after collapsing on
Bozeman’s Main Street. Timothy Ward had never married and had no known relatives at the time of his death (The Anaconda
Standard 17 March 1914, Findagrave.com 2004). When Ward died, he left the West Lamme Street property to Laura A. Hodson.
Upon her death, the property would go to her sons Guy and Rex Hodson (Ancestry.com 2015).
Laura A. Hodson lived at this property in 1904 according to the R.L. Polk & Co City Directory. In 1906 Laura and her family had
moved to Livingston, MT. Laura’s sons sold the property to David Williams on June 26, 1917.
David N. Williams was born in Pomroy, Ohio to Noah and Mary Williams in 1857. David Williams and Dora Moore were married at
Reese Creek, Gallatin County, MT on April 24, 1892. Dora was born in Malad, Idaho to Amoes B. and Celia Moore on May 13, 1870.
David and Dora lived in the Springhill, MT area for a time. David was postmaster in Springhill and also farmed in the area. They
moved into Bozeman and lived at this property from 1909 to 1920. David and Dora moved to California between 1924 and 1929 (see
Table 1). David Williams died in Los Angeles, CA on August 16, 1928. Dora Williams died in Los Angeles, CA on November 28,
1945 (Findagrave.com 2004).
The property changed hands several times before Eugene and Ophia Brady purchased the property on April 29, 1937. Eugene was
born in Metropolis, Illinois on December 28, 1881. In 1940, Eugene and Ophia did not live in this house, but lived at 613 West
Lamme Street (along with John Brady). Howard and Catherine Brady lived in the house on this property. Both Eugene and Howard
worked at Forristell Cash Grocery at this time (R.L. Polk Directory 1940). Eugene was living at 613 West Lamme Street when he was
drafted for WWII. He is described as being 5’-5” tall with brown eyes, bald head, and weighing 175 pounds (Ancestry.com 2015).
Eugene Brady died in Fallbrook, CA on November 29, 1969 and was buried at the Cypress View Mausoleum and Crematory in San
Diego, CA (Findagrave.com 2004). Ophia (Ragland) Brady was born in Metropolis, Illinois on December 24, 1882. She died on
December 17, 1970 in Oceanside, CA. She is also interred at the Cypress View Mausoleum and Crematory in San Diego, CA.
The lots were subdivided in 1973 by Charles C. and Sheril S. Fjeld. Various people owned and occupied the property since the
Brady’s tenure there, and the current owner as of 2019 is the Hilleboe Family Revocable Living Trust.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered an “intrusive
element within a potential historic district.” There appear to be no changes since this previous survey, although the original survey
does state that design and materials have changed since its original construction. The application of asbestos shingles likely dates to
the early mid-century, within what is now considered the historic period.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district
composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the
Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008).
Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 3rd Addition in order to evaluate district potential.

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
The site is good condition overall. It retains integrity of design, location, workmanship, setting, and association. Replacement of
original windows and the application of asbestos siding in the mid-century have affected integrity of materials and, to some extent,
feeling.
