The house is wood-framed and asymmetrical. It has an L-shaped plan with a concrete block foundation. The roof is steeply-pitched and hipped, with a projecting gable-front comprising the west half of the primary façade. The roof is covered in asphalt shingles and the exterior walls are clad in asbestos shingles, with wood shingles in the upper half story, within the north-facing and west-facing gables. Within the covered porch, the siding has been replaced with vertical tongue-and- groove siding. The primary façade faces north. The main entry is a standard door located on the east half of the house, sheltered and accessed by a gable-roofed porch. To the west of the entry is the projecting gable-front, which has a centered picture window with a one-over-one- lite window in the upper half story. The west elevation also has a one-over-one-lite window in the upper half story, contained within a full gabled dormer. The first story has two one-over-one-lite windows at the north end and a shoulder-height fixed window at the south (rear) end of the elevation. The east elevation contains a secondary entry, at-grade. There is also a square fixed window at the north end of the elevation, and a large window opening on the east wall, within the covered porch. A sky-lite is located on the east- facing slope of the roof, and a brick chimney pierces the gable wing. Basement lites are visible and consist of two-lite sliding windows. The rear (south) elevation of the house was obscured from view from the public ROW. A 1952 wood-framed, gable-roofed two-stall garage is to the south of the house, opening south onto an east-west-running alley. The garage has asbestos shingle siding and an asphalt shingle roof. The two stalls have wood doors; one is a canopy door with four rectangular window lites, the other is a six-paneled canopy door. Above the vehicle bays is a sign advertising “Western Tree: Your Tree Care Professionals.” The rear yard, between the house and garage, is enclosed in a vertical-board cedar fence. The apron of the garage, as it opens to the alley, is currently used for storage of several watercraft and what appear to be two fiberglass ski patrol rescue toboggans. This site is in good condition. Vegetation in the front yard includes a manicured lawn and a mature deciduous tree, probably an Ash, to the east of the paved front walk. Photos show Halloween decorations in place at the time of survey. The property was first recorded in August, 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” Metcalf has re-evaluated the property and finds the site is in good condition overall, and while it has seen several major modifications, it does retain several key aspects. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 520 W LAMME ST Site Number: 059 HISTORY OF PROPERTY Prior to construction of the house at 520 W Lamme St, this property was part of William H. Tracy’s extensive land holdings. He purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872 and included it in platting Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883. The date of construction for the house on this lot is estimated based on existing Sanborn fire insurance maps, which show that the house was present by 1912, but not yet built in 1904. D. Harvey Budd purchased the property on May 18, 1915. Budd was born on December 21, 1877 in Lancaster, Wisconsin to Frank and Addie Budd. He married Goldie Lee Thompson on June 29, 1904 in Bozeman, MT. Budd owned a plumbing and heating business (The Independent-Record 29 Mar 1932). Goldie Lee Thompson was born on February 28, 1886. Budd died on March 28, 1932 and Goldie died on May 26, 1973. They are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). John K. Tedrick purchased the property on July 26, 1916. John Kerr Tedrick was born on November 6, 1835 in Londonderry, Ohio to Robert and Mary Tedrick. John Tedrick moved to the Gallatin valley in 1897. John married Henrietta “Etta” Wylie. Etta Wylie was born on October 11, 1854 in New Concord, Ohio to Moses and Elizabeth (McCartney) Wylie. Etta Tedrick died on November 2, 1937. John Tedrick died on November 23, 1932. John and Etta are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Findagrave.com 2004). Dennis and Lola Jones purchased the property on September 18, 1962. Dennis Franklin Jones was born February 16, 1915 in Reed Point, MT to Daniel F. and Anna (Wirak) Jones. In 1923, Dennis Jones moved to Bozeman, MT, where he worked as a meat cutter for 45 years. On August 25, 1946 he married Lola Mae Callantine in Livingston, MT. Dennis retired in 1968 and died ten years later on September 30, 1978 in Bozeman, MT. Lola Mae Callentine Jones was born August 26, 1917 in Bozeman, MT to Oran and Sadie (Pavey) Callantine. She attended schools in the Bozeman area. After Dennis died, she moved to Brookings, Oregon. She was an avid fisherwoman and was part-owner of an ocean pleasure boat named “Sweet Pea.” Lola returned to Bozeman in 2007. Dennis and Lola are buried together in the Morgan Cemetery in Springhill, MT (Find A Grave 2004). Lola Jones sold the property on July 22, 1981. McDonald Architects. At that time, the property was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” There appear to be no changes since this previous survey, although the original survey does state that design and materials have changed since its original construction. The application of asbestos shingles likely dates to the early mid-century, within what is now considered the historic period. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 2nd Addition in order to determine district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 7 Integrity Property Name: 520 W LAMME ST Site Number: 059 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site is in good condition, overall. It retains most aspects of integrity. Alterations include the erection of a detached garage behind the house, and the application of mid-century siding (asbestos shingles). Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character in reference to early 20th Century housing development in central Bozeman.
