ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION
Architectural Style: Queen Anne If Other, specify:
Property Type: Residential Specific Property Type: Single family home
Architect: Unknown Architectural Firm/City/State: Unknown
Builder/Contractor: Unknown Company/City/State: Unknown
Source of Information: N/A
The property at 516 W. Lamme Street, consists of two historical/architectural features: a house built around 1900, and an outbuilding
dating to 1905. The house is a wood-framed, two-story structure in the Queen Anne style of architecture. It faces north, onto W.
Lamme Street and has a T-shaped footprint with a cut-stone foundation. The roof is gabled and clad in asphalt shingles. The exterior
walls are clad in either horizontal wood or Masonite siding. The gables contain fish-scale wood shingles.
The primary façade faces north, and is asymmetrical. The entry is on the east end of the elevation, recessed from the central gable-
front portion of the house. The entry is accessed by an offset shed-roof open porch. The porch is of poured concrete, and above-grade,
with board and batten siding on the front-facing wall around the door and adjacent window. Beside the front door is a one-over-one
lite window, a replacement but within the original opening. In the central gable-front is a modern metal-framed window with two-
side-by-side fixed lites on the first story. Above are two double hung windows with one-over-one lite windows in the upper story.
Over the roof of the porch on the east end of the façade is a diamond-shaped window on the second story. On the west side of the
façade, recessed from the gable-front, is a one-over-one lite double hung window on the first story.
The west elevation contains a one-over-one lite double-hung window centered on the first story. The gable end on the west elevation
has a one-over-one-lite double-hung window centered on the first and second stories, cornice returns, and wood shingles in the gable
peak. The rear (south) elevation has a single-story gable roof extension to which a shed dormer has been added. The gable peak of this
addition is clad in wood shingles. On the east side of the addition a shed roof, which offers protection for the backdoor entrance. On
the first story of the south elevation is the door and a one-over-one lite, double-hung window. The windows throughout the structure
are within the original openings, and conform to the original style. The two obvious replacements are the diamond shaped window and
the first floor window on the north elevation.
Feature 2 is a wood-framed, wood-sided, gable-front structure with a corrugated metal roof and Z-braced side-hung doors. City
records show a date of 1905 for its construction. There are no windows on the east or west elevations, and the north elevation was not
visible from the right-of-way. The exterior of the storage building is in original condition, and the metal roofing sheets are laid over
the original wooden boards of the roof.
A modern framework erected to support the panels of a solar energy system is at the rear of the property near the south alley.
This property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At this time it was considered an “intrusive element
within a potential historic district.” The original survey indicates that design and materials have changed since the original
construction. The site is in very good condition overall, and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character.

History of Property
Property Name: 516 W LAMME ST Site Number: 057
HISTORY OF PROPERTY
William H. Tracy purchased this property from the United States on June 15, 1872, prior to the construction of a house at this location.
He platted it as Tracy’s 2nd Addition on May 16, 1883.
In the original survey of the property at 516 W. Lamme Street by James R. McDonald, the original home owner is noted as Roy Bair.
However, no other reference has been found associating the home with this individual. Bair is listed in the 1908 R. L. Polk & Co.
(Gallatin County, Mont.) City Directories as residing at 221 W. Mendenhall, which was also the location of his livery stable address,
and shortly thereafter he moved from the community.
William Belless purchased the property on August 22, 1903. William Belless was born in Soda Springs, Idaho on July 19, 1863. At
the time of his birth, he and his family were traveling overland to Virginia City on a wagon train. He was reportedly the first non-
native child in the Alder Gulch mining camp (The Billings Gazette 12 Dec 1939). In later years, from 1880 to 1885, William Belless
drove the stagecoach from Virginia City to Bozeman (Ravalli Republic 12 Sept 1962). On March 3, 1890, William Belless married
Clara Blain in Bozeman, MT (Ancestry.com 2002). Clara Blain was born in Webster City, Iowa on April 25, 1872, arriving in
Bozeman around 1899.
In 1910, William and Clara Belless lived at 614 West Lamme Street with their adopted daughter, Ina Belless (Ancestry.com 2006). In
1930 they still lived at the same house on West Lamme Street, but the address had changed to 516 West Lamme Street. William
worked at the Montana State College (MSC) gymnasium as a janitor. Due to his work at MSC, he met and knew hundreds of students
between the years 1921 and 1933 (The Billings Gazette 12 Dec 1939). William died on December 11, 1939. Clara died in Bozeman,
MT on September 15, 1949 (The Great Falls Tribune 18 Sept 1949).
Charles H. and Maidie L. Bell purchased the property on December 4, 1940. Charles H. Bell was born on October 21, 1899 in
Belgrade, MT to David and Agnes (McCartney) Bell. On June 20, 1925, Charles married Letha Lobdell in Bozeman, MT
(Ancestry.com 2017). Letha Lobdell, alternately referred to as Maidie L., was born on March 11, 1902 in Chicago, Illinois to Ralph
and Zennetta Lobdell. The family moved to Belgrade in 1904. Letha received her primary education in Belgrade, and attended Billings
Business School. When living in Bozeman, MT Letha worked as a secretary for Montana State University (The Billings Gazette 19
May 1988). Charles Bell was the president of First National Bank in Bozeman, where he worked for 34 years. He also served as
president of Bozeman’s Chamber of Commerce. After Charles Bell’s death in 1960, Letha married C. E. “Ed” Stephenson on April
26, 1965. Ed Stephenson died in 1987. Letha Bell Stephenson died on May 18, 1988. Letha is buried with her first husband, Charles,
in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT (Find A Grave 2004).
George E. and Juanita E. Foreman purchased the property on June 12, 1947. George Foreman was born on February 9, 1904 in
Bozeman, MT to Edward and Iona Foreman. He began a career in the Forest Service at a fire lookout on Lone Mountain. He married
Juanita E. Andrews on September 15, 1927. Juanita (Andrews) Foreman was born on August 28, 1910 in Sumner, Wisconsin to
Augusta and Tom Andrews. The family moved to Montana in 1916 and settled on Brackett Creek (The Missoulian 28 Jan 1994).
George and Juanita sold the property on July 6, 1953. He retired from the Forest Service on December 31, 1965 with 36 years of
service in the Squaw Creek and Shields River districts (The Missoulian 16 Apr 1980). George Foreman died on April 14, 1980 in
Bozeman, MT. Juanita Foreman died on January 25, 1994. George and Juanita are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in
Bozeman, MT.
George and Juanita Foreman sold the property in 1953, and after that date the property changed hands seven times (see table). The
current owner as of 2019 is Blake Maxwell.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
This property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At this time it was considered an “intrusive element
within a potential historic district.” The original survey indicates that design and materials have changed since the original
construction.
Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or
State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been
evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site
is associated with a person of local note, William Belless, who purchased the property in 1903 and resided there until the 1930s. He is
notable as the first non-native child in the Alder Gulch mining camp. This association, however, is not sufficiently significant to merit
individual eligibility. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing
to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its
historic association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential
architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 2nd Addition in
order to evaluate district potential.

INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
This site is in very good condition, overall. Few alterations to the residence or to the out building appear to have been made. The
aspects of materials and workmanship have been affected by the replacement of two windows on the main façade of the residence and
the application of modern siding, likely in the late mid-century. However, Metcalf finds the residence retains the aspects of location,
setting, materials, workmanship, and association, sufficient to convey its historic character in reference to its style and period of
construction. The outbuilding is in near original condition with all aspects retained.
