The wood-framed house is 1.5- story single-family residence with characteristics of the Queen Anne style. The house has a roughly rectangular plan shape with concrete facing the original foundation, which may have been cut stone. It is a gable-front structure clad in clapboard-siding and the roof has asphalt shingles. The primary façade faces south and the main entry is on the end of the elevation, within a recessed shed-roofed porch. Directly above the porch entry, the wall is clad with fish-scale shingles. The shed- roof is supported by a single turned-post column on the southeast corner. The porch also has a spindle-work railing and the steps have a modern hand-rail with unturned spindles. The entry door and a large one-over-one lite double hung window are protected by the porch overhang. In the gable-front that makes up the west half of the south façade is two windows: the main floor window is a large fixed-lite window, and centered in the gabled upper half story is a one-over-one lite double hung window. The soffits have been enclosed. The east elevation contains two one-over-one lite double hung windows and a third window not fully visible from the right-of-way due to the presence of a fence along the property boundary. On the west elevation two windows are set on the main floor, one a four- lite window at the south end and the other a modern replacement one-over-one fixed lite window nearer the rear corner of the house. A smaller, fixed-lite window is the only window on the upper story of this elevation. Most of the windows do appear to be replacements, but the replacements are within the original apertures and are of a type that is sensitive to the historical style of the house. The north elevation was not observed from the right-of-way. At the far north end of the narrow lot on which the house sits, is the second feature: a wood-frame, gable-roof barn. This barn structure faces north onto West Beall Street. The 1.5-story barn is sided in unfinished, weathered, horizontal boards and the gable roof is wood-shingled. On the north elevation are two openings on the lower level, the smaller of the two has been filled in with a fixed vertical board panel and the larger opening filled in with a three-part arrangement of hinged sections of vertical panels. Above this larger opening is a small square opening in which a hinged piece of plywood has been set. A galvanized metal stovepipe rises from the roof above this small covered opening. On the west elevation, a single window is set high in the gable end. The east elevation has a single window set in the gable end and the exterior wall has been patched with plywood along the bottom section of the wall. The south elevation was not visible from the right-of-way. The door openings appear original, but the present doors are clearly replacements. The windows are likely original. The barn is undated, and does not appear on the early Sanborn maps, but it is likely to have been built shortly after the residence was constructed. A small, modern metal storage shed sits along the east property line between the barn and the house. This property was first recorded in 1984 by James R. McDonald Architects. At this time it was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” The original survey indicates that design and materials have changed since the original construction. The site is in very good condition overall, and Metcalf finds it retains sufficient integrity to convey historic character. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 History of Property Property Name: 513 W LAMME ST Site Number: 056 HISTORY OF PROPERTY William H. Tracy purchased the property from the United States on June 15, 1872, prior to construction of the residence at this site. He platted the land as Tracy’s 3rd Addition on May 16, 1883, and began selling building sites at this time. The property now addressed as 513 West Lamme St. first appears on the Sanborn Fire Insurance Company maps as early as 1891, though it was referred to as 32 W Lamme St. In 1904 and 1912, it appears on area maps with the address 613 West Lamme St. A city sewer permit was issued for the property in 1917. William and Sarah Tracy sold these lots to William H. Stevens on September 12, 1904. William H. Stevens was born on May 18, 1853 to James and Mahala Stevens in Missouri (Ancestry.com 2001). William Stevens married Mary Ellen Gray, who was born on December 10, 1860 in Wayne County, MO. The two settled in Bozeman and census records indicate William was farming here. Mary Ellen died on March 10, 1919 of influenza during a “renewed” epidemic that broke out in Bozeman in 1919 (The Anaconda Standard 1919). William died on February 12, 1935. William and Mary are both buried in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. William and Mary Stevens sold the property to John A. Bartholomew and Elmer L. Bartholomew on August 9, 1906. The Bartholomews only owned it for two years before they sold it to Theodore Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence sold the property to Edgar A. Thompson on November 3, 1909 (see table). Edgar A. Thompson was born in Afton, Iowa in approximately 1857. Edgar married Mary Maude Umbarger in Bozeman, MT on June 26, 1899. Edgar and Mary Thompson sold the property in 1918 to Fredrick W. Kittams. Fredrick “Fred” William Kittams was born in Syracuse, New York on January 29, 1869 to George and Mary Ann (Puysure) Kittams. Fredrick married Mary Lizzie Hidinger on February 15, 1893 in Union, Iowa (Ancestry.com 2014). Mary was born on March 4, 1869 in Clayton County, Iowa to John and Lidia (Watters) Hidinger. Fredrick and Mary moved to Bozeman c.1907. While living at 513 West Lamme Street, Fredrick Kittams worked as a postal clerk for the U.S. Post Office. Fredrick Kittams died on December 19, 1947 in Bozeman, MT, while living at 513 West Lamme Street (Ancestry.com 2017). Fredrick and Mary are buried together in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Bozeman, MT. Arleigh Kittams was the only child, a son, of Fredrick and Mary. He was born near Prescott, Iowa on November 26, 1893, and left Prescott with Fredrick and Mary when he was 13 years old. Arleigh also worked at the U. S. Post Office as a stamp clerk and mail clerk. He never married (The Adams Free Press 1960). There have been various owners of the property since Arleigh Kittam’s death in February 1960. The current owner as of 2019 is Paul M. Huser. Table 1. Chain of Title, 513 W. McDonald Architects. At this time it was considered an “intrusive element within a potential historic district.” The original survey indicates that design and materials have changed since the original construction. Sec. 38.700 of the Bozeman Municipal Code defines an eligible property as one that meets the criteria for inclusion in the NRHP or State Register either 1) individually or 2) as a contributing building to an existing or potential historic district. This site has been evaluated against the NRHP Criteria and has been determined to lack individual significance under Criterion A, B, C, and D. The site is not located within an existing historic district; however, it should be considered eligible/contributing to a potential district composed of similar structures observed in the vicinity. The site retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic association with the Civic Phase of Bozeman’s development, which saw growing variety and refinement of residential architectural styles (RTI 2008). Metcalf recommends further research be conducted regarding Bozeman’s Tracy’s 3rd Addition in order to evaluate district potential. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 8 Integrity Property Name: 513 W LAMME ST Site Number: 056 INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) This site is in very good condition, overall. With the exception of the replacement of original windows with modern sash, no major alterations to the residence or to the barn appear to have been made. The windows that have been replaced did not alter the original window openings and have had only minor affect on integrity of materials and workmanship. Metcalf finds the property retains sufficient integrity to convey its historic character.
